You can buy it now or buy it later and from what I've seen/been told, there's little to no financial advantage of buying it up front. Point being, if you're not certain you'll keep the car past the factory warranty, you can wait and extend it later, if you still want to..

IMO with any German made car, lease or get the extended warranty. But it makes more sense to buy it later. I see a lot of used cars being sold with the extended warranty, and you will never make your $ back on resale of the warranty.

So I picked up my car last week and during the "financing" part when they were trying to sell me a bunch of warranties, the finance manager told me that the extended warranty price goes up as you get closer and closer to the expiration of the original warranty (e.g. if I bought it that day it was $2.5k but if I bought it 3.5 years from now, BMW would want $4k for it). Is there any truth to that? I want to call BS but I wanted to double check here first.

It seems like a better warranty. For only $100 a year, it has 7yr/100K coverage for EVERYTHING(except wear and tear items) with $250 deductible per repair. You can choose to repair anywhere including BMW dealership which use OEM parts. So it cost $700 for 7yr or less if you hit 100K earlier.

If you wait until your factory 4 year is about to expire, it covers 5 years from that date, so 9 years of coverage. |

I bought an extended warranty a couple months right before my Audi manufacturers warranty was about to expire.
The price I paid was the same whether my car was just recently purchased or several years old. Don't let them pressure you with that higher price tactic. A lot can happen in 4 years, so if you want to wait, then I say wait. I got the Audi endorsed warranty, but they basically farmed it out to a third party warranty company anyway. I dealt with the third party, not Audi. When selecting a warranty, get the one that is all-inclusive and then lists the exclusions (not vice versa, where it lists what's covered and everything else is assumed not covered). The start date is not when you purchase the warranty. The start date is the vehicle purchase date, when the car was brand new, which could be several years ago. |

Im confused, the factory warranty is for 4years/50K miles and the extended warranty picks up after the factory warranty and goes to 7 years/100K miles. So why would the price go up based on mileage and age of the car?

I bought my last BMW, an 07 e92 335i on the CPO program, which is like the extended warranty, and I can say that I have had Turbo's, Wastegates x2, Vanos solenoids, Thermostat, and a few other things that would have cost upwards of $5k+ from the dealer if i wouldn't of had the warranty. The dealer typically try to find stuff wrong to fix because they get paid for it from the manufacture. When your spending $50k on a car whats an extra couple of thousand for twice the peace of mind.

This is different from any car warranty I have ever researched on any of my vehicles. In general, they usually start when you buy the warranty. |

Lots of mixed opinions here so I guess its a gamble either way. I made it to 110K on my last 325i before trading it in and had no problems other than minor maintenance that wouldn't be covered on the extended warranty anyway.

It also may come down to semantics used by the finance guys. You don't buy a 100k mile warranty from BMW, you extend the factory 50k warranty to 100... So if your finance guy worded it as buying a 100k warranty, sure, that starts right away, because the first 50k is the factory warranty and always starts right away......but what you're actually paying for, the extension, is the second 50k. And the cost of that extension doesn't change whether you buy now, year two, etc. what may change is how many years they let you extend it, because there is a maximum years and mileage they'll cover. |

This is from my BMW dealer and past experience with extended warranty:
option 1 - Extended warranty 7years/100Kmiles + free maintenance service (exactly the same as what BMW gives you the first 4 years/50K miles). Price is not negotiable. option 2 - Extended warranty 7years/100K miles with no free maintenance service (everything that was covered under 4year/50K, will be exactly the same). Price is negotiable. Regardless of the plan, each can be purchased at time of new car delivery or 4 years/50K miles later. It is better (and cheaper) to purchase now instead of waiting for 4 years, especially for option #2. Based on my past extended warranty experience with other manufacturers (Audi, VW), I negotiated and purchased it at car closing. 3 years later, I sold the cars and they reimbursed me for the unused portion both time (prorated). Bought it for $750 and got $450 back. Not bad I guess. I'm still waiting for my F30 delivery, but I already discussed with my CA that I wanted the extended warranty 7year/100k (without the maintenance) at 50% off MSRP and he said that would not be a problem. Basically I said I will meet him 1/2 way. I think with one bad mishap and it will cover it. I feel better that I bought it from the BMW dealership rather than a 3rd party, even if it costs a few $ more. |
