The inevitable has happened....
... just pissed off it's happened so soon,
My first stone chip. Is this repairable with a smart repair?

Well, yes, obviously.
However, and don't get me wrong as I do detailing as a hobby, so feel your pain, but it is absolutely inevitable that you're going to get more - so you'd be better off getting yourself the touch up paint kit from BMW and doing it yourself, as unless you dont' ever drive your car anywhere, it will always get stone chips. If you're going to have a smart repair done (at circa£50-£80 a pop) you may as well buy a few spare bonnets pre-painted from BMW for what it'll cost if you're going to do that on every stone chip you acquire. I've had similar on mine and what I do is clean up the area, touch in the chip and then flatten back (with a light wet sand if required) and then machine polish so it'll be virtually undetectable anyway. If it's any consolation, I had to have my windscreen replaced after about 4 weeks of ownership, as a stone/pebble/rock/intergalactic meteorite obliterated it.....but don't get me started on how fucking pony all these new BMW windscreens are all in the name of 0.1 MPG fuel economy. |

In the meantime, you can get those touch up vinyl stickers to protect the metal underneath until you get it painted

It's a car. It will get them. Just enjoy the motor and do a batch repair when you are really p1ssed off with them

If you really want to keep the paintwork unchipped, paint protection film may be your best bet. Helps protect against scuffed bumpers as well.

Ouch, what happened there?
I've picked up a BMW touch up kit, my main concern was it was down to the metal, I realise they are just cars and there are bigger things to worry about, just annoying when the car isn't even a month old.

If it makes you feel better last night I was doing 60 in the lane to the right of a low loader with a jcb on the back, it hit a big bump and literally chunks or mud and stones flew everywhere, sounded like a hand full of big stones getting hurled at the bonnet and windscreen, made me wince. I'm expecting to find similar when I wash it tomorrow. Shit happens. I'm really fussy about cars but you can't avoid the inevitable. That could be easily sorted with a touch up kit. YouTube some videos on it. There are some good tutorials online regarding it if you are not used to doing it. Would no way go to the lengths of a smart repair for that. Just make sure you clean with alcohol and prime before top coat and clear goes on. As it's down to metal. Good luck mate.

Hi Jay
Sorry to see this, it'll be my turn soon, no doubt I wouldn't use the BMW touch up stuff though, it's seriously thick and hard to apply IMO. You're better off with Dr Colourchip - https://www.drcolourchip.co.uk/. I've used it on Alpine White and its pretty good for small chips, although if you're down to the metal, you may need to layer it, not sure?

PS Jay, if it makes you feel any better, I had a disaster with my driver side front door recently. The wind caught it a couple of weeks ago during the storm we had and took it right back. Made a terrible sound and misaligned it. Local BMW dealer was f***ing useless, predictably. Managed to find a good, BMW approved indie bodyshop who sorted it for the price of a round of beers.
Owning a new car is not good for the blood pressure, that's official!

First world problems eh mate. I've used the BMW kit and applied with a toothpick so at least the metal isn't showing and it's less noticeable. Not the best job but it's better than it was.

It is strangely quite helpful when you get your first incident, as you can now use the car like its supposed to be used & not be massively OCD about, which is what I do at the beginning. I remember almost having palpitations when I was getting the winter tyres fitted .... I actually had to hand the keys over to the guy at Costco and he would actually drive it onto the ramp etc. etc. !!! I was quite relieved at having crossed that hurdle!!

I wouldn't bother paying for a smart repair either. Give this a go, and post some photos of the results:

Recall BMW doing a smart repair to minor bumper damage prior to my collection of an approved used. Lasted literally 12 months then refused to repair it for me again and the sales manager suggested 12 months was extremely acceptable strongly told him otherwise! Williams Stockport....... |
