ASS Coding
Did anyone get their ASS firmware/software updated to remember the last setting upon vehicle delivery? Did the dealer charge you for it?

It's free, but the dealerships are saying that it's hurting BMW's CAFE rating, so they are saying you have to drive it around for a couple months before getting it reprogrammed.

I took delivery 5 days ago and I had them code it before I even saw the car.

Depends on the dealer. Mine gave me some bs about how it causes conflicts with nav and therefore they can't do it. I'm getting it done by a 3rd party since I want other things coded anyway.

My dealer tried to charge me $200 after the fact but I pointed the following bulletin and they agreed to drop it. They tried to say something about changing the Sport display also but since that was so minor - I think they will drop that too.
SI B12 15 12 INFORMATION The Automatic Start/Stop (MSA) system is a further BMW Efficient Dynamics measure aimed at meeting BMW’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing fuel economy. BMW, always a leader in innovative technology, will be the first automobile manufacturer to bring MSA technology to all new models. Automatic Start/Stop systems will become prevalent in the future, as manufacturers strive to meet increasingly stringent emissions and fuel economy requirements. By automatically switching the engine off when the car is stationary, MSA can improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. New F-vehicles now incorporate the second generation of MSA (MSA II), which has been further developed to operate in combination with an automatic transmission and the BN2020 electrical system. A detailed description of the MSA Automatic Start/Stop function can be found in the ICP Technician library under Technical Training course ST1112. SITUATION Some drivers have expressed the desire to deactivate this function in certain situations. This can be done manually via the Automatic Start/Stop function button with the LED switched on, indicating that the start/stop function is deactivated. However, by default, the Automatic Start/Stop function is reactivated each time the engine is started. At the request of an owner, it is possible to modify this default logic to “Last user mode.” With this logic, the current MSA’s activated or deactivated setting is stored and used on the next trip. Note: All new BMW M models have the “Last user mode” as the default setting from production. PROCEDURE Explain the benefits of the MSA technology to the customer: The environmental benefit of reduced greenhouse gases and the financial benefit of improved fuel economy The attachment is a document that you can share with customers, which provides an overview and answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. It should be given to all customers at the time of sale, and placed inside service loaner vehicles equipped with MSA. Should a customer still request “Last user mode,” submit a PuMA case entitled “Activate MSA memory conversion.” The IBAC code necessary to perform this conversion will be provided in the response to the PuMA case. Using the latest version of ISTA/P, perform the conversion “Activate MSA memory,” along with a complete vehicle coding and any required programming as determined in the measures plan. Upon successful completion of the measures plan, the option OMSA is added to the vehicle order. Note: When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only “XX.XX” V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section. WARRANTY INFORMATION The conversion procedure outlined above can be submitted for reimbursement, one time on eligible vehicles, during the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty coverage period of 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. |

In mid December, my dealer told me they cannot open the PUMA case until after the car is delivered. In my case I'm still driving with the standard setup and am not as annoyed with A.S.S. now after 6 weeks of driving. I am quite pleased with the average 21.5MPG in my 335. Same routine in my now gone but beloved 2010 E90 335 (N54) yielded 17.5MPG average. I suspect most of the fuel savings can be attributed to the 8 speed tranny and the default Comfort mode engine tuning.
Yes, I have heard of others getting this coded before delivery. I suspect some of the internal techs at BMWNA will send the code even if the car has not yet been delivered. You should never pay for this coding. If your dealer tries to charge you, show them this. |

I have to keep my ASS
I had my car in for software updates/recalls and told them to do the ASS coding too. The service advisor said they couldn't do it. I said, "Yes, you can".
A tech who was walking by overheard us and said, "We could, but we're not allowed to on any more cars". He said that BMW NA has done too many and it was affecting their (and I'm foggy on what agency or program he referred to) EPA rebate, or something similar. I have to say it made sense. If you're BMW and you claim a car model gets a certain MPG and emits a certain amount of smog, you can't then disable a system that contributes to those numbers. I may look into get it done some other way. |

I picked up my car on wed. 2/20 and after reading this forum and driving the car with A.S.S active, I knew I did not like the system and also did not like having to shut it off everytime I got into my car. I asked my dealer to code the system to off before I take delivery. At first they said that you can just turn it off and BMW suggest you leave the system on. They then said it would cost me a few bucks if I did want to code it off. I said, Ok forget it, I will go some place else to buy the car. End of story is they coded the A.S.S. off and also updated my maps on my nav since I bought a 2012 left over with 0 miles that has been sitting at the dealer for a year.

Had our other BMW in the shop today for routine maintenance and asked the service adviser about coding ASS at delivery. (My 335i just finished production and is waiting in line for a spot on a boat in Bremerhaven.) He confirmed that BMWNA is permitting a one time code update of ASS but he reiterated that they would only update once.
So essentially no issues with updating the ASS to default to last setting prior to delivery. I was happy to hear that. |

Confuguring ASS to remember the last user setting is cool. It's still annoying that the driving modes (eco, comfort, sport, sport+) can't be coded in the same manner and it always goes back to comfort.
