Tyre Insurance

Anyone bother with tyre insurance? I'm seriously thinking of it.

Had to replace 4 X 255/35/18 and one 225/40/18 on my E91 and all due to nails/pothole damage. I'm still within the 90 days, so I can still take some cover. Cost wise it's about £319 for 4 years cover with £0 excess, 5 tyres (max £300 per tyre).

That cost feels a bit high. i think you can get it sub £200 if you show around on the web.

I had it on our 5er and it paid for itself after the first RFT tyre!

I bought separate tyre insurance per tyre when I changed some tyres on my wife's car a few months ago.

It was an offer from ATS and was an add-on to the tyre price.

I can't remember exactly what the terms of the cover were, but the cost was negligible considering the cost of the tyres.... luckily not had to make use of the policy yet.

I took out Tyre Insurance through the dealer when I picked up my F30 in June this year and they agreed to match the car2cover price of £259 (3yrs cover for RFTs, up to 5 replacements). So far I've had two punctures so it's paid for itself in the first nine months.

My previous car was an E81 and I had three punctures in two and a half years, so with my current car that's five punctures in three years three months! Think I may be one of the unluckier ones when it comes to punctures but the insurance has been worthwhile for me.

My dealer said with the BMW tyre insurance if the tyre is more than 50% worn they only pay 50% of the replacement cost. Put me off completely. Has anyone checked the small print to know if that is true?

I was looking into this today. On the BMW.co.uk website it states:

* Your tyre(s) must have 6mm or more of tread depth at time of claim to receive 100% of costs. For part worn tyres with less than 6mm but more than or equal to 2mm, 50% of costs will be paid.

I also looked on the ala.co.uk website and that doesn't seem to list any such restriction for their tyre insurance so it would seem to be the much better policy to go for.

I might change to ALA when my BMW policy expires. To be fair, the first tyre they replaced had nearly 8K miles off it and I'm sure was under 6mm but they replaced it without any quibbles. The second puncture was only 1K miles later and it was the same tyre so it was practically new!

Scratch that idea then

Must say, the one benefit of the BMW insurance is you just go to the dealer, they replace the tyre, you drive away. No paperwork, no paying up front and re-claiming.

Thats their new Insurance, I got it just before it changed, the dealer started my cover a month before I got the car, only good thing they did for me, they even said they would not try and sell the 50/50 type of insurance...
