Ticking noise during turning - seeking consultation
Hi,
My car is at the dealership for about 3 weeks now. The issue is that during the turning, either when car is parked or in the move, you can hear Ticking. The noise is in both cases, when turning left or right. The challenge in most cases you will hear it, but sometime is will be so quite that its very difficult and it happens ones that even my wife opened eyes and asked me what was that? The noise is similar to one which we would hear from moving flap on a gear, klick, klick klick. Faster Im turning steering, ticking frequency goes up. ALso depends on the weather is can be also different, and in cases when Im driving for a longer time, when parking I may not hear anything. When Im driving above 30 miles I have never heard this ticking. Only in slow speeds or when stopped. Dealer assumes that this comes from some stress/tension between some parts. As for today they are replacing a lot of the parts, but without success. Even the struts have been replaced to new. Presently Im in the mode that Im getting a lot of new parts installed, but from other side I just want back my car. BTW: I was given replacement cars, and Im testing cars from 3 series, X3, up to the latest BMW toy, X5 eDrive. So for sure I'm not left without car. Did anyone from you had similar issue? Any recommendations would be grateful. thanks and best regards! |

Could you share more details about your vehicle
- Model year? - Production date and miles? - Video with sound? (if possible) - What parts have been already replaced? ... and symptoms - Clicking happens only when turning the steering wheel? Left and right? - No clicking while the steering wheel is not being turned? - If the clicking increases as the steering wheel is being turned faster, it _might_ be electrical in nature since the steering is basically controlled by an electrical motor. In my vehicle, 2013 BMW F30 335i xDrive sedan with 20K miles, the engine was replaced after BMW dealer diagnosed excessive connecting rod bearing wear. It all began with a faint but noticeable "clickity-clack" sound at idle speed. It's somewhat unusual that the dealer cannot find the root cause even if the symptoms can be consistently demonstrated. |

- Model year? 335ix model 2013 - Production date and miles? Sep 2012, around 35k - Video with sound? (if possible) No possible now parts of suspension are in pieces. I will try if on Friday they will put all together and car will be driving. - What parts have been already replaced? Dealer mentioned about struts this week, but they replaced a lot of the parts in previous weeks. Told me that I will get all on the end when they car will be fixed, but I asked them to provide me a list now. ... and symptoms - Clicking happens only when turning the steering wheel? Left and right? Both - No clicking while the steering wheel is not being turned? No - If the clicking increases as the steering wheel is being turned faster, it _might_ be electrical in nature since the steering is basically controlled by an electrical motor. Yes its increasing with the speed of the turning. They are quite sure that this comes from some tension in the suspension In my vehicle, 2013 BMW F30 335i xDrive sedan with 20K miles, the engine was replaced after BMW dealer diagnosed excessive connecting rod bearing wear. It all began with a faint but noticeable "clickity-clack" sound at idle speed. Nothing like that. Only when Im turning steering wheel left or right in stop on slow drive. When idle, no suspicion noises It's somewhat unusual that the dealer cannot find the root cause even if the symptoms can be consistently demonstrated. Yes, its said a little bit Last edited by Bostro; 06-08-2016 at 10:55 PM.. |

Did the dealer open a PUMA case with BMWNA? BMWNA typically sends an engineer to work with the dealer and determine what parts will be replaced. It's not a guarantee that the root case will be found of course.
Please keep us updated. |

I was told that shop foreman is working on my car and that he may have not opened the PUMA case yet, but I was assured, that for sure it will be done if its needed. I'm still waiting for the list of already replaced parts but I'm starting to have doubts will I get it before repair is accomplished.

Get the info about parts being exchanged:
...we have replaced the left front strut, one of the left control arms, the upper guide support on the strut and now the tension strut (thrust arm). And still no luck. They have some other ideas to try on Monday and also they will decided to involve or not BMW. And yes, the noise is during the turns left or right, no difference. |

Hi. I just found this forum, and maybe your car is already repaired. But, if not, were the CV joints checked? And are the current CV joints after market or reconditioned? |

I have this same issue on my 2015 435i. Currently I am very modded so I dont feel like bringin it in to dealer, but soon, I will have to revert back to stock and bring it in. Please let me know if any new update come sup or you found the solution. Thank you.
My problem is also at slow speed turning. when not moving, car doesn't make a noise. Comes from wheel wells im pretty sure but not 100% sure. Hope it's nothing serious.

Just came back from business trip and the update is....
"We still are looking, problem not resolved" Will keep you updated. Trying to make a deal if they do not resolve the problem I'm switching X5edrive to i8, they just received one in light blue CV joints.... I just sent the message to them, tomorrow should not it, but from what they told me it was not replaced so I would expect to have still OEM part there. Will keep you up to date on progress. When does the factory warranty expire? Probably soon. Since you live in Colorado, could this problem be a within Lemon law framework in your state? |

I will start looking into the Lemon Law more if the car is not fixed next week. This would be 4 weeks at the dealership. Thanks for pointing me to it.
Here is additional update, directly from my phone: - Noise can be clearly heard with chassis ears through out the left front strut assembly and knuckle. Currently I have yet to hear it through any of the steering components - The front CV axles appear to be OEM. - When have eliminated everything within this assembly. - At this point the next likely scenario is the noise is transmitting through the chassis, in particular the left front area. - Moving forward, I have removed the front bumper and am inspecting bracing and cooling cassette mounting. Still no success... |

Next update...
After consultation with BMW engineering motor mounts were targeted for replacements. Parts came, parts have been replaced... issue is still present. Next discussion were focused on power steering rack, which was confirmed today that is targeted now for replacement. Order has been placed and hopefully tomorrow we will not more, are we finally have resolution or not. As you see, saga continues... regards! |

thats usually a pothole related mishap. how does the car sit? measure your front wheel gaps or the top of the wheel arch distance to the ground. if one is seriously lower examine that side's suspension also look at the right side if the tick is when turning left.

After the exchange of the steering rack the noise is greatly reduced and the when it occurs has changed. But still is there... The problem is not all fixed. Im afraid that also what could happen is the exchange of the steering rack is not helping to much, is rather now covering real problem a little bit. Next step is to do couple of other checks and back on line with engineer. Will see tomorrow what plan has been set by dealer. Also I decided to discuss the situation directly with service Dir. It looks like I need to start educating myself on Lemon Law more. Car is in repair for more than 7 weeks now in one shoot. When I will add first visit, not successful attempt before, we are talking about more than 8 weeks spent in the dealer shop on same problem. Trying to be more positive, I will have more new parts then before, but what the value of it if I can not drive the car. regards! Saga continues... |
