Get a grip, on a manual, you'll never look back.
The BMW manual gearbox isn't that great in general, you know it's true when I opted for the sub par SMG in my E46 over the 6MT. I have a buddy that works for BMW, these aren't the only failures friend

I'd honestly trust a remanufacturerd tranny over a OEM brand new one with potentially more future issues.. The remanufacturered one has been fully inspected/tested most likely and carries the same warranties as new.

That being said, what the heck happened to your 6MT? Mines silky smooth for the most part and I can't imagine how it could fail unless it had a major fluid leak causing it to over heat.

I have no idea what happened. I don't drive it hard, and I've driven a manual transmission my whole adult life. Hopefully it was a one off, but time will tell.

I have a 2013 335xdrive which was one of the first off the assembly line. I am getting the same crunch in between gears. It used to be rare but now at 35,000 miles any shift over 5,000 from 1st to second definitely crunches. Somebody mentioned if they replace the transmission they don't cover the clutch. Wtf!!!

I have an S2000 that I track, the S2000 has one of the smoothest transmissions of all time (lots of press to back this up). That said, the automatic transmissions in the F32, F82 that I own and have driven are fantastic. I'll take the newer autos every time for driving fast. You won't see an F1 car w/ a manual anytime soon.

The clutch isn't the problem, sychros are. If you pay for the clutch they may throw in the labor free. They'll be in that deep anyway. But that clutch wear at 35K miles is probably greater than 70% life left.

I had my 6mt replaced at 15k miles same issue. Now at 22k miles I have the same grinding issues. .... dealership has had my car for 4 weeks and I am now waiting for a clutch and fly wheel. They said they think that is why the transmission keeps going out. Soon I will be on my third transmission! Not sure if the second transmission was new or re manufactured. Every one talking about this transmission being silky smooth, just blows my mind.....

I am experiencing 1-2 grind over 3k rpm. 2013 335i 10k miles. Made an appointment to take it in, hopefully they don't bust my chops because I have a upgraded clutch in there. Clutch has nothing to do with faulty syncho but let's hope for the best!!

The 2nd gear syncro problems are common among these new 6mt. Just manufacturing defect nothing more. Get it replaced under warranty and move on.

A remanufactured tranny may have gone through more stringent inspection before it was released back to BMW due to the known fact that it has failed before. At the time of receiving it at the repair facility, they would have gone through each component as inspected it's condition. The transmission would be then re-assembled, and reinspected, as tested.

Of course, you can compare gearbox part numbers using etk.cc

You didn't like e92 gearbox? You had e92 n54 or e92n n55? That cars have different gearboxes too

i have an early 2013 335i xdrive with about 30k miles on it, and i have always felt that shifting from 1st to 2nd was a little grindy, i have tried shifting at diff rpms, but only like 1 out of 10 shifts is smooth.

i wonder if i have the defect or i am just shift challenged...

e92 N52 and N54... Shifting from 1st to 2nd was always a PIA. Not the case with my F32, very impressed with this one.

for any of the guys that have experienced f30 1->2 shift issues,
can you describe the conditions under which it would be most likely to occur?

like what RPM, and are you trying to shift as fast as possible, is the clutch fully depressed, etc...

i'm trying to determine if i have a faulty transmission (before i go out of warranty)...

appreciate any 411!

Exact issue on a 2014 335i 6MT

27000 miles. Got the car as CPO, with 16000.
Noticed some grinding when up-shifting OR down-shifting into 2nd gear, almost from the day I got the car, but associated it to me "getting familiar" with the car/gears/clutch. Despite having 20+ years of MT experience.

Over the course of several months, I felt it was getting worse and realized I'm getting more and more hesitant and careful when 2nd gear shifting. And, my belief is that the 2nd gear in MT cars should be one of the more enjoyable ones...:-)

This grinding made all the "2nd gear fun" go away...:-(

Read this forum, took my (under-warranty) car in, and sure enough, the transmission is being replaced with a rebuilt one.

Interesting bit about the process: my local BMW service shop needed authorization from BMWNA before proceeding with this replacement. They had to take a transmission fluid sample and my SA commented the color was BLACK.

Not sure what caused what: bad synchro discolored the fluid, or "something else" ruined the fluid, causing the synchro to fail later...
