What's up with the "fake" exhaust on my 335iGT?

I Love my new 2016 335iGT but can't begin to describe my disappointment with the driver side exhaust pipe which seems to be shut off 99% of the time. IMHO, pretty cheesy of BMW to put 2 gorgeous exhaust pipes on the car and then make the one "off" virtually all the time. I don't mind the single pipe back from the engine into a central rear muffler with 2 pipes but to have 1 pipe shut off is bogus!

Now I know about the" efficient dynamics" mantra and all that mumbo that the factory will spout about the efficiency etc. but it's all ....just.... so....darn......
DISAPPOINTING!

+1. Not to mention that after 1 year, my driver's side pipe looks like brand new and the passenger side is sooty as hell. A bit embarrassing to drive like that.

There are some threads on this. In general both exhausts open when driving at high rpms. So looks like you are treating your car well. But I don't go high rpms often. Will ask my service guy if they can do something to permanently keep both exhausts open. I believe exhaust restriction helps with engine warm-up so might be a good thing in winter, but not sure how important this is?

From what I can tell some 6 cyl. 3's have true dual exhausts but F34 doesn't.

Well.... No N55 powered car has "true" dual exhaust, but F30/31/32/33/34/36 have a valve that closes the driver's side exhaust pipe when you first start up the car and when the car is in comfort or eco pro. You can simply unplug the valve connector before starting your car in the morning to keep it open at all times..

There's a reason why both pipes aren't open all the time. When one pipe will give the best results one pipe is open. When performance will be better with both pipes open both will be open.

That's one of the reasons. If it wasn't important BMW wouldn't do it.

Put it into. Sport or sport plus and it should stay open at all times. In comfort, it will only open up when you stomp on the gas I think, or are at higher rims, or both?

Golf tee mod. Will keep it open at all times. That is the cheapest way to modify it.

But if you want a cleaner way to do it (so the plugs are not exposed to the elements) you can go cg precision vsc-1 variable sound controller (I'm using one of these) which allows you to set it at open all the time and also includes a remote to open and close it at your preference. Also, bms can Flap module is another option. Or if you plan on going jb4, or have jb4, that will allow you to keep it open at all times too.

I'm sure my neighbours hate me when I start the car in the morning or late at night. Mpe w/ resonator delete and flap set at open hahaha. I love it though.

Don't get that its a rip off you can leave it open for free if you just unplug the damn valve.

well its only $300 and has some other interesting features. I like the idea of controlling it from steering column controls especially if the drone gets annoying on the highway or something.

It opens when there's the potential for excess back pressure with only one pipe open. It's closed when the engine is cold because doing so warms the engine faster, and the engine won't operate at peak efficiency until it's fully warmed up. If you force it to stay open when the engine is cold thinking that will get you better performance think again, because it will have the opposite effect.

Good technical info to know. Thanks for sharing!
Thankfully, I'm never looking for "performance" when the engine is cold lol. I just love the sound!

Since I can't stand the one side all dirty, I did the Golf Tee Mod.

13K miles later with no complaints and I have even soot distribution

I think there is alittle more exhaust note too
