I learnt driving on manual transmission. It has been ages since I drove one. Right now, I m concerned to drive manual.
I see many guys here having M/T. Why do you guys like it? |

Because 90% of automatics suck and don't give much to driving pleasure.
A purely automatic car, can be rather soulless and cack. |

Oh boy...here we go. Don't you also want to know if xDrive on All Seasons is better than RWD with snows?
But to answer your question...I drive an MT because I enjoy shifting and always have. I've driven the AT with the paddles and have to say, it's a blast too. If BMW ever drops the MT (God forbid), I would be fine with the auto. You'll find that most MT drivers are pretty passionate about their third pedal, though. |

I've had manuals since I was a kid. Some of my wife's cars have been automatics but I've only had one. I had a 2010 535i M Sport with paddles but couldn't stand it. I never used the paddles. It just seemed silly to me. Others will disagree. I feel more engaged with a stick shift. Finally, these days it's a great anti theft deterrent.

I feel more connected with the car when driving manual. DCT's are a blast to drive though don't get me wrong. I just prefer the feel of clutch and stick.

Whether or not you actually currently drive a manual or not. (I don't sadly), if you must openly ask such a question, you probably shouldn't be in a BMW....

I also learntadid on a MT There has never been an auto on the market ( including DCT) that comes close to offering the fun factor of a MT for me. I'm sure many people (sounds like you are one of them) just like to put their right foot down and let the car do all the work. Different strokes as they say.

I miss having a manual trans. The sheer joy of rev matching alone is what makes it great. Plus, it deters theft

Yeah, I love driving and the MT immerses me in a way an AT cannot. We're all aware of how "good" ATs are and now faster by gnat's wing, but so what?
If it were 0-60 in 10 seconds with MT and 5 in an AT. Hmmmm might have to reconsider. Not the case though.

Love my MT. It adds to the driving pleasure. Had the AT for my first two E90s and the MT for the past two F30s. Will never go back to an auto......

I've driven MT most of my life but bumper to bumper commutes for 40-50 minutes each way everyday is a sure fire way to making an AT attractive.
In my F36, I got an AT and really enjoy it although you feel a little less connected to the driving experience and I always feel like I'm using the brakes so much compare to engine braking with a MT. |

Cut my teeth on a lot of manuals over the past 45 years. Nevertheless, I went for the 8AT this time. It just seemed right given the rest of the modern tech on this car. I do use the paddles and find it gives a connection to the car. Maybe not quite the connection as a manual but given the other benefits of the automatic, its an acceptable compromise.
The reality is that the paddle shifters is the fast way around a race track these days and that is the way you would find a M4 DTM car configured. So if the race drivers are paddling around a race track, I feel that I have to leave the manual transmission behind. My next car which is likely an M3 will have a DCT. |

once upon a time manual transmission was vastly superior to automatics.
In 2015, that decision is very difficult especially if you commute in traffic. I prefer the ZF 8 speed over 6 speed stick in a BMW 3 series, but I prefer a 5 speed manual in a weekend drop top.

I'm confused on the whole traffic thing... Is it really that hard/annoying to drive a MT in traffic? I personally have never had an issue, save for when I was a first year novice.. I've frequently drive in LA traffic, SF traffic, Seattle traffic, and although it sucks going so slow, I just don't get why it's so hard to drive an MT in traffic.
