I currently have an F30 and my lease is up soon.

So I went to the BMW Un4gettable event and drove both 4 and 4GC for about 45mins each.

I was planning to get a 4GC, but after driving both the Coupe just felt a lot more special and looked a lot better to me. I don't really need the rear doors that much.

My last 4 cars have been coupes. I ordered the Gran Coupe. It's annoying for the off chance that you need people in your car or when you need to transport something.

Will do! Need to think this out thoroughly so that I will enjoy every bit of second driving that car. I don't wanna drive around and later on wish I had bought the other type. More inputs are welcome!

Wow I wish I can have the opportunities to test and drive both cars! So are you planning to get a 4 Coupe? I assume that they have the same handling/performance,etc so basically its all down to the "appearance"?

I drove both. They felt exactly the same.

actually I think you are getting the two extra doors free on the GC because I think the GC msrp is less then the coupe.

If you like both designs and can get in and out of both easily I would say get the GC because its a better deal. Power tailgate and two more doors.

I got the coupe because I like the design better and i'm thinking less people will buy them because they cost more and are less practical. I also don't like being designated driver when I go out with friends.

They only have a $100-200 difference between them.

I think the Gran Coupe is actually the more attractive of the two. The proportions are just right on. The F32 isn't ugly by any means, but the F36 is just gorgeous.

Then, as soon as the decision seems easy, I remember that you can get a 6MT on the F32 and you can't on the F36. Damn it.

I do like my GC, but unless you expect to actually utilize the rear seats, get the 2 door coupe. One key advantage to the longer doors is NOT having the B pillar blocking your view directly to the left!

I test drove both (although had the Coupe as a courtesy car for a few days) before buying, and while I found the cabin, the longer doors, and longer windows in the Coupe gave it a sportier feel... I opted for the Gran Coupe!

It still has the same low roofline as the Coupe, but with the practicality of 4 doors, hatch, folding rear seats, and one more seat over the Coupe.

That, and the powered tailgate is a neat touch on the GC ;-)

One thing about the smaller doors in the GC is that while agree ingress is a little tight- but not that big a deal- Im 6'0, but I like to hook my left arm back on the B pillar to assist my exit a bit- where as on a coupe many times (I have owned E46 coupes for the past 5 years) I tend to use the seat side bolster more and it wears over time.
Maybe its just me?

Twisting to reach the seatbelt/taking the car in to fix the stupid seatbelt arms in the coupe vs having the belt mounted on the b-pillar in the GC is something to consider. The downside is that the b-pillar will block the side view of a 5'10+ driver, while the coupe gives you just glass to look out of.

wow! nice observations, never really thought about the seat belt in the coupe before. Does it mean its safer to drive in a coupe because you will have less blind spot?

Meh. Insurance on a coupe is higher.

I'm 6'1, so when I check my blindspot in the GC (and just about any sedan), I'm actually looking out the rear-door window behind the b-pillar. In the Coupe, my blindspot is still a partially blind spot due to looking directly at the c-pillar. Tall guys have it bad when it comes to cars! The fact that the coupe gives you glass in your peripheral is nice vs a dark b-pillar, though.

My thoughts exactly on F32 vs F36 - I will say however that the 4 series in general to me looks better in darker colors. My brothers all blacked out 435 F32 coupe is AWESOME. That said, the GC design is, to my eye, the best looking of all current BMWs- save for the 6 Coupe (the 6 GC is just TOO big looking).
The 4 series is both totally Sporty in the F32 form, but the F36 is in the Porsche Panamera style that is more elegant than sporty

Handling? Again, should be minimal; the track width and wheelbase remain the same.
65 kg is minimal? People chase a few kg here and there in order to get the edge yet you call 65 kg minimal. Lol, my F31 weighs in at 1595 kg (the 4 banger is light as).

Personally I think if you want 4 doors go with the sedan. The coupe is a coupe and a coupe is a 2 door car, period. Never liked the A5 sportback concept. If you like the 4 series go for the 2-door, ESPECIALLY when u can save as much as 65 kg.

My 2 yen.

Yes this is what I was thinking about lately. I guess I am going for the 2 door coupe because I can get myself a 3-series if I wanted a 4 door car. To think about it, I really do not need a big car at the moment because I still have no family and all. Anyway, thanks for the very useful feedbacks. I will try to update with some photos of the car in the near future.

Which is why they called the 5dr a Gran Coupe

I'm trading my F30 Sedan for an F36 GC. They look identical, but it's surprising how different they are to sit in, and to drive. It's personal taste though - I do prefer the look of the GC to the Coupe, even though I like the cabin of the coupe a little more.

As for 65kg, it can be negligible depending on what kind of driving you do; that's barely one adult passenger... which in turn comes down to what you use the car for, and whether or not you can deal with 2 doors.

I love the look of the 4GC, so besides the practicality of 4 doors and a larger trunk I would get the GC just for looks.

Id love to see an M4 GC though - wish BMW would make it!
