BMW F30 ed Alloy Wheels Change

HELP ME PLEASE!!!

I had my F30 EffecientDynamics car delivered on Friday and boy it looks average on the 16" wheels. I pre bought the 397 F30 sport alloys and fitted them to 225 45 18's tires however upon test drive the vibrations throught the steering wheel/pedal was terrible. I went back to the garrage and checked the balancing and the same thing happened again so i had no choice but to remove the beautiful 18's and put on the ed 16" aero wheels.

Question is, has anyone else successfully fitted different alloys to their ed model and driven at any speed? if so what set up did you use? alloy size tires pressure?

I read that various owners of the previous ed have managed to change the allos sucessfully so there must be a way!??! Name: Picture 023.jpg

The wheels were bough from a guy who was changing his 397's for different rims. they cost £900 for the alloys and i spent another £500 on tires which were at cost. Expencive cost forthem not to actually work!!

Do you want to make me an offer for them or any pearls of wisdon on why they dont fit or how to make them fit?

Be sure to have the new wheels and tires balanced with a Hunter GSP9700 road force balancer, with an experienced tech at the helms of course.
Most shops do a very poor job of balancing wheels.

Hi Road

The guy you see sat in the car is my brother who owns a tyre/exhause garage here in the UK hence tyres at cost. He re ballance and then balanced again.... same terrible vibration..... I think it has to have something to do with the weight of the 18's and the whole car is set up for puny 16's and effeciency.

Maybe there is somthing in the ECU stoppoing us changing these wheels sucessfully...

I believe the ED has suspension/ride height changes to target efficiency.

The 320ed has a lower ride height than stock -10mm.
I agree the Eco wheels do look a bit puny but I'm not too fussed as the higher sidewalls and non run flats give a great comfy ride.
How come you didn't go for the SE as you could have had a set of 18s or even 19s for less as an option?

Maybe one of the 18" wheels is defective or tyre misshapen?

The 16" Aero rims are only available on the "320d Efficient Dynamics" edition. Not even on the regular 320d. The 320d ED is only available with 16" rims and with a tuned suspension to increase the fuel efficiency. There is one other model rims available at additional cost for this car, but they are also 16".

The cars engine is also specifically tuned for efficiency as are varies other things. You can find some details here;
http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/models/320d-ED

And if you need to complain about rims, you should know that in some markets they even offer a 316d with 16" steel rims and hubcaps.

I desperatly want to change my wheels i have had 330i and 325i Msports so really miss the bigger wheels/firmer ride.

The company car policy has changed so we all get stock tree hugging ed's or opting out or i would have ordered the 328i if i had the option.

On the point re a defective wheel tire - my brother checked/fitted them and aloghned them all twice and it still happens......

No need to go back so far... my 2006 E90 318i also had 16" as standard.

Oh wait... 1995... E90 320i... something does not add up.
1995 is E36 era, so we're down to 15".

Just a thought could it be hitting the bump stops with the lower ride height of the ed and 18s fitted?
Understand now ref the company car at least your saving a shed load on company car tax

No it wasnt the bump stops or it would have done it at lower speed - it only judders at 70-80.....

Yeah there is the saving on the tax however if i get the wheels on then its a win win.....

Hey Paul

Sorry to rekindle an old thread.

Did you ever manage to upgrade the wheels to 18?

Thanks.

Be interested to know if anyone has an answer to this. I know the car is lower and has different suspension stiffness and also aerodynamic plates in the undercarriage but unsure if this would effect the 'balance' and cause vibration... I suppose the suspension set up coil do though?

Were they oem BMW wheels or reps? 900 for the wheels sounds cheap for authentic OEM IMO...

Have you tried to run rubber hub rings between the wheel and hub to keep it centered at all speeds? Most reps need these, they're called hub centric wheels so they need the rubber buffer to stay perfectly centered when compared to OEM.

Hope that helps or gives a new idea to try! Good luck!
