Question RE spark plugs and coil packs

Hey guys and gals -

I have a '14 335i xDrive with 50K miles on it. BMW recommends spark plug and coil pack replacement for all 6 items at this mileage. I called my local BMW dealer and they quoted me $1500 I was wondering if anyone can recommend a reputable brand of coil packs and spark plugs. I was looking around and see many recommendations for OEM or Bosche, but I wanted to make sure before I make a move. Also, what's a reasonable price for this service in your opinions?

Was looking to pull the trigger on the BavAuto High Performance Coil Pack of 6:

https://www.bavauto.com/5005-6

Along with the OEM spark plugs as well:

https://www.bavauto.com/12-12-0-037-582

Any thoughts?

Would the Dealer hook you up and do the maintenance at about 49.5k miles and still cover it under the free 4 year 50k mile maintenance program ??

Not sure, I have heard some success stories but I would imagine they'd give you a hard time.

I looked up the service information booklet for my F36 and it only mentions replacing the spark plugs every 6 oil change interval or appr 60K miles. Didn't see any recommendations to change the coils as well, so the cost of just replacing the plugs should be quite a bit less. In the good ole days, this was a simple DIY, but with these newer engines, this might be more involved?

I figured if I'm going to swap the plugs, I might as well swap the packs as well. They're super easy to replace and fairly inexpensive.

Still not terribly involved.

Service manager says the spark plug change is due at 60K and I would be too far past warranty for him to justify doing it under maintenance. He quoted me $650 just for the spark plug swap. I literally told him he was insane.

That's way too much. I did mine for about $300 if I remember correctly

Yep. Just picked these up and found an indy who will do the job for an hours labor. So around $250 soup to nuts.

I would Not use these coil packs! I used to be a big Bavauto customer with my E36 and slightly into my E46 before having some issues with "Their" products. I actually bought a set of their proclaimed "performance coils" only to read multiple complaints on E46 Fanatics forum of constant codes and misfires. They seemed very cheaply made and my mechanic did not want to put them on my car due to their quality appearance and the specs provided by bavauto vs O.E.M/Bosch. He said there is No way they would out perform the stock ones. So I sent them back. Now, onto the current platform. Not sure about the coil replacement interval, but I do remember reading something about plug replacement around 50k. I got my '14 335i @ 35K, was FBO by 45K and did the recommended one step colder plug replacement for being tuned. It literally took my mechanic about 30mins. while the car was still plenty hot. Gave him $40 and will feel more than comfortable doing it myself next time. I'm quite sure the O.E.M coil packs will provide more than enough juice for at least 80k-100k. If they start throwing misfire codes however I would replace them.

After doing some more research I decided to just swap the plugs for now. Purchased OEM plugs and just got them delivered yesterday. Will be swapping them this weekend at my indy. Thank you for your comment.

Plugs and coil packs are easy to swap (coil packs are obviously easiest since the just snap on the top of the plug).

I'd do what you are saying and just swap the plugs for now. If you start having misfires in the future, swap the bad pack or all of them at that time.

They are just coils. Not sure why their recommendation is to swap them with the plugs. It's not like they wear out.

Yes there is no point in replacing the coilpacks, they aren't a wear and tear item. Replace the plugs and let er rip

One more vote to not replace coil packs unless you?re getting misfires.

This is important to note: if your engine is stock or just has an intake/exhaust, there is no need to get anything but OEM BMW or Bosch plugs and coils. There is no performance benefit to using any other component.

A dealer that quoted you $1500 to replace spark plugs is bordering on criminal. That?s seriously disgusting. I?d never go back there again unless you had no choice.

The parts MSRP around $600 for sets of 6, plus $350 labor at local dealer.

Online price is around $480 for DIY with $0 labor.

No point buying OEM parts if you?re doing it DIY or Indy shop. $300 will buy Delphi and Bosch parts.
