Although changing the oil every 3-4k with synthetic is overkill, it certainly beats going 15k.
Depending on driving habits the oil may or may not last that long

I have an M5 (which is where I've been on the forum). At any rate, I bought 2014 CPO 328i for my daughter for graduation this past weekend. As with the M5, my biggest complaint with BMWs is the lack of a dipstick, and an obstructionist position towards the consumer doing any maintenance. It took me a bit to get the proper oil capacity on the M, but I finally did. This little car has ~6,500 miles on it, and I want to get my Mobil 1 0W-40 in it. So, just to be sure, capacity is 5.3 quarts? (This is what I'm told by the dealer). (I need a password to get into BMWs service database...). Thanks...

Did it today. I actually pulled 8 oz from the 5qt jug of M1 0W-40, and the oil monitor still read full... I bought a little 3/8 torque wrench (inch pounds) to insure light touch on that plastic oil plug...

I had the oil changed in my 2013 F30 this past Friday at 1565 miles. Currently iDrive says oil service is due within 11K miles so I'll have it changed again on my own dime around 7K miles.

For what it's worth, wikimotors states the engine oil capacity is 5.3 quarts for N20 engine. I put 5 quarts during my last oil change and the oil level reads at the max mark.

I used mobil 1 0W-40 on my e90 for 10 years and the car is/was running strong. Used it on the M235i and plan to use it on the 428 also

There's alot of info in this thread. I'd like to know the rationale behind BMW's choice of a plastic oil pan\plug on the RWD 328i? That just seems stupid.
As to the oil change intervals, you cannot always believe the MFG claims that 15k is appropriate for every situation. Yes synthetic does increase the OCI, but we all drive our cars differently. My 2016 328i xDrive M Sport is on order, i plan on doing shorter OCI's in between the free BMW ones. I generally do Blackstone Oil Analysis reports whenever I change my fluids and will be posting the results here. Lastly, lifetime fills are completely bogus. I've completed oil analyses of several different components of my previous daily driver (trans, transfer case, rear diff) all of which claimed "lifetime fill." Needless to say, the Blackstone analysis report disagreed with the MFG claims. |

For those that are interested, I just finished a DIY video for an N20/N26 oil change. Thread is here.
Video is here:

So the RWD 328i with the plastic tank and plug has a massive shield that requires about 15 torx screws to be removed in order to access the drain plug. Has anyone found a replacement shield that wont require removal each time the oil needs to be changed? If all else fails I may get the scissors out and cut an access hole because that thing is a PITA to put back/remove each time and I just dont feel comfortable not having since the oil pan is plastic.

You should NOT have to remove an entire shield under the engine to drain the oil.

Got a new 2016 328i xdrive with N26 engine. Service guys swear you don't need to change more often than every 10K but my plan is to do a break-in change at 1,500 and then one between the free 10K changes. Can't believe the owners manual doesn't tell you how much oil to use Anyhow sounds like 5 - 5.5 quarts of 0W - 20. My question is will the DIY oil change reset the maintenance notice intervals that display on the dash?

Let's put this to bed once and for all. From the Service Manual (Bentley)
N20/N26 Engine AWD = 5.1 US Quarts (4.8 L) RWD = 5.3 US Quarts (5.0L) N55 Engine 6.9 US Quarts (6.5L) N47 (Diesel) 5.5 US Quarts (5.2 L) So for an N20/N26 just buy the 5L jugs and call it good. and before you ask, no the manual does not cover the B48/B58 engines yet.
