403M vs 405M

I'm seriously considering swapping my 19" 403M for the 20" 405M wheels. Not all cars suit the 405M as they contain a bit of black/dark grey. I think they'll suit my EB2 with M Performance car -- mainly due to the black accents (grills, M Performance side sills with M Performance decals).

I'm not worried about the ride as I find the 19" already very soft and compliant - so firmer ride with less rubber would probably be closer to my liking, even with my adaptive M Sport suspension.

Here's my car now with the 19" 403M and a BMW show car with 20" 405M.

Thoughts?

IMO ... the 403's look great. But it sounds like you have already sold yourself on the 405's.

From comparing the show car to your's, it looks as if it's the only thing missing to almost be an exact match.

Get ready for guys to ask how much to ship to from New Zeland to New Jersey.

Those big 'ol brakes look good inside those wheels on the second set of photos. It would be tough to get the 20's on without 'em after seeing those photos.

Have you thought about getting a set of HRE or Morr wheels. Both manufacture wheels that are forged and light and look sensational. You are spending a lot of money anyway so you should consider all of the options out there.

I went with 405Ms, although seriously considered 403Ms at one stage. No issues with ride harshness, they're still quite compliant, akin to 19's on the E9x which I was pretty familiar with anyway. 405Ms have better proportions for the car if you ask me (more so with the M performance body kit and the added visual "tallness" of the car). Clearly they're also a more aggressive design (and the Orbit Grey looks great IMO). 403Ms on the other hand are a bit more understated, which is not such a bad thing, and I guess ride slightly softer.

+1

And, the 405's are curiously narrow and expensive. The Morrs and HRE's are the best looking wheels in this forum.

I like the 20s, but potholes would destroy them where I live. They're rather expensive in my opinion too, I'd rather get a nice set of forged wheels for the same cost.

Love the Estoril blue color with the 405's. I went with them on my jet black 328i as well and very glad I did. Look great with dark windows, carbon fiber spoiler and black kidney grills.

I vote for 403M. I just switched mine form the 400M to 403M in black.

I think the 403M's are a really nice looking wheel. I wish that BMW had just made them wider and/or in a 20" variant.

Bollocks! The black 403M's are hard to accurately capture in photos. They look great!

Bumping this thread rather than starting a new one.

Was hoping someone who had made the switch to 405m wheels could share their thoughts.

Any issues with turning radius or rubbing when going over humps/ potholes? Do the wheels feel like they're too large for the car?

Any input in much appreciated.

The width and overall diameter of the 19" tires on M403 and the 20" tires on M405 is the same.

The change to M405 will not influence turning radius or cause rubbing!

Ah ok... Thanks for that. I am still on the stock wheels that came with my F30. So just looking to get a feel of how people are liking their 405M wheels.

Personally I think they are completely over priced and for the money there are better looking aftermarket wheels out there

Bare in mind the 405´s weigh significantly less than the 403´s, I think its something like 10-11 kg vs. 13-14 kg. Now THAT will make a big change not only to performance but comfort aswell. My 20" wheels that weigh ~11.5 kg made a huge difference vs the 403M´s I had, but I´m sure the Michelin PSS add to the comfort factor.

Yeah, and you could also buy a 430kW/740Nm HSV GTS for about the same price as your 328i. A lot of people would argue that your car is overpriced.
At least the 405Ms are a legitimate performance upgrade. I.e. they're forged and lightweight. I paid about $4200 for mine with new Pirelli p-zero run flats. If you account for the cost of the tyres, the wheels roughly set me back about $2300. Not overpriced for a set of forged wheels I think.
