Surely an outside perspective for a little extra know-how is welcome news. With the 'down grading' of the M badge with the M performance vehicles some expertise with the possibility of 'upgrading' the M badge to rival AMG Black Series and who knows even rivals for bespoke SLC/SLS (we can all dream) would be welcomed for even the most died-in-the-wool of BMW fans.

So most of you think that 1 engineer means the whole company changes direction? How many here actually work in an engineering environment? Thought so.

So there was a news that BMW will introduce an AMG Black series competitor, and now they are snatching up the guy who was in charge of chassis engineering of the said Black series. BMW clearly doesn't agree with those of you in the "AMG SUCKS BECAUSE I DRIVE A BIMMMER" camp.
Couldnt agree more, i dunno what those guys are smoking, but lately AMG products have proven to be more driver oriented than those fat ass M's of late, not to mention black series products and the SLS, which BMW doesnt even have a product to compete with in the first place.

And he will work around M's philosphy for sure, and as an engineer he must be a great one to have worked his way up on AMG, which lets not forget, also supplies engines for some great cars, like pagani.

People saying that AMG cars of late can only go fast in a straight line def lives in a cave or are too biased.

Great addition to BMWs M division, in fact, IMHO couldnt be a better addition.
Couldn't agree more. One man alone also doesn't decide how a car handles and feels. He is one part of a much larger process for developing and building a car. Hopefully he'll be able to offer insight to M and get really proper driving machines pumping out from BMW again. Looking forward to what comes next!

Mercedes has a more illustrious racing history than BMW, they know how to make a driver's car if they want to ( to be fair, I am sure BMW can also make cars that rides like a Mercedes), they just have a different target market.

Talent is talent, I am sure the engineer can design cars that suits BMW's requirements.

Posted this on the other thread.....

I think the difference in driving dynamics is more about the different philosophies between AMG and the M division. There's no reason this move can't lead to great M cars.

A quick google search brings up this article which says that Meyer "learned his chops working at BMW's M division and also racing BMWs." http://www.motivemag.com/pub/feature...k_Series.shtml

What was Meyer's role at AMG? Was he the "chief engineer of the black series programs?" If so that seems like a good guy to have. The black series' versions of the CLK63 and C63 are cars I'd prefer over pretty much any M car.

Maybe he left MB to get away from what they have been doing with high torque straight line wonders.

Or maybe, just maybe its just a nother job for a guy like him.

I think M and AMG is starting to switch places. AMG now being more fun around the track and loud. M being not as fun and need noise from the speakers. So, BMW probably forsaw the future. M in the past may be faster louder and fun, but AMG is starting to catch up real quick.

He designed cars that fit AMG's corporate culture, which is different than BMW M's, but there is no reason he could not design a car that fits in BMW M's corporate culture, the magic BMW fairy doesn't have to visit you for you to work for BMW. You just have to understand what BMW mission is and work toward it. Its a full company effort to build a car, and everything gets approved by the board of directors...no one worker can change that.
people have strengths and weaknesses, and they have experiences which pave their skillsets. It is real possibility that this AMG engineer knows how to make AMG-like cars, which are very different from BMW cars. Many people on this forum have chosen BMW cars time and time again, because they are different in a better way than the competitor, Audi, Merc, etc. To have the two brands merge in any way, can be seen as a threat to the uniqueness of the brand.

So you are saying, if a team of engineers go to this guy with the idea of putting an I6 in an M3/M4, he might get a stroke because it's not a 6.2 or 5.5L V8?

If that's the case, then there's absolutely, positively no way that Cadillac can make a good handling car then. Which is obviously not the case at all.

Oh my what a win for BMW ///M - if you have ever had the pleasure of driving an SLS AMG you will know that we are in for a treat. The car has one of the most amazing suspensions I have ever experienced combining every day living with balls to the wall race!

What makes all of you think that this guy can only design things "the AMG way", or that he's somehow tied at the hip to that philosophy? AMG existed long before he did, and with plenty of other designers. As did BMW M, for that matter. As an engineer, I can assure you that most talented designers can design things more than one way, but company philosophy often overrides personal preference. If BMW wanted to hire him, I'm sure they were seeking talent and skill set, not just a way to make a cookie-cutter AMG and relabel it as an M...

Disclaimer: I have not read every response on this thread.

AMG products have been vastly improving in terms of handling for the past several years. BMW M products, well, not so much, although to be fair they are the benchmark.

BMW M is clearly going the route of forced induction and no manuals anyway, so I really doubt this hire will affect their direction. I find this sad, but it appears inevitable.

I think the guy has talent and and look forward to his input.

Well there's always a benefit when a Head in a company joins another since he has experience/secrets/ideas to be revealed for the new company, something which definitely provides some + effects in a way or another for future models.

Despite what some people think of his designs...BMW overtook Mercedes and became the number one premium car brand during the Bangle era.

The current crop of BMWs are also evolutions of his designs.
