I will be setting aside a large amount of time refining my playlists to make the most of this when it gets here! (that and spending way too much time reading F30 reviews, the owner's manual, surfing this site etc etc. it can't be healthy...).
I went for the nine speaker system, which seems to have speakers located in the same locations, but minus the tweeters, I think. Although....it might be that the rear shelf mid speakers are replaced by front tweeters in the door pillars? If you go into the build my car facility on the website and select the hifi option and look closely at the interior car picture...speakers do appear in the door. This is certainly the case in the HK system. The other difference between HK and hifi is that the amp in the HK is 600watts while the amp in the hifi is 200watts or so. I went for the latter, based on the fact that I have the six speaker system in my current 318d SE e90 - it has the subwoofers under my arse, rear shelf mids and front door mids and the sounds is deep and rich from this set up as it is, so I'm guessing I'll be more than happy with what I think is an updated/upgraded equivalent of my existing set up. The HK sounds like it will be fantastic though, I just couldn't justify selling one of kids to get all the added extras I wanted though :-(

Thanks to PrinceBarin's advice I'm getting the H/K upgrade. I'll be very interested to hear whether it's as good as the blurb says though - I used to be very into my car audio in my late teens/early 20s. Not stupid boy racer loud systems though - I only installed systems in my cars designed for sound quality, so we're talking lots of sound deadening, top-quality tweeters & mids in the doors, 10" subs in custom-designed, self-built built sealed boxes in the boot with 600W RMS amps, etc. I've heard from others in the car audio community that BMW's previous upgraded stereos were disappointing but our expectations are unrealistically high, which is why I didn't bother getting the upgraded system in my previous BMWs.

Still, the systems I installed cost a lot more than £650 just for the parts, never mind my time installing them. So I do think it's worth it. I do hope the amp is 600W RMS and not peak to peak though because I think it'll need to be to power that number of speakers.

I think you will be more than happy with it. Car first, gadgets second. It's still going to be a great ride.

Thanks...yes it's all relative isn't it? I remember my dads early car being advertised as having stereo 5 watt speakers in the parcel shelf with a six channel radio...no cassette, no cd, no iPod....and this was a marvel at the time! A ford cortina 1.6gl if I recall properly!
