My car (mid-October build) is very quiet at speeds up to 140 km/h; I haven't had an opportunity to go faster, but soon !

Hmm maybe i should try this

Ofcourse the metals are getting thiner, they try to make them lighter by making them thiner which saves them money. The hood on my e92 335 bends when I rub my hand on it while washing on it. The older bmw's were wayyyyy sturdier and more solid compared to now!

The focus in terms of engineering materials these days is to make materials lighter, stronger and more flexible. While you say the hood is sturdier on an older car, it's also a lot heavier and not as strong.

I think it's a collection of issues. Pushing for lower weight and higher MPG is obvious, but the pricepoint is also a huge factor. It's easy just to select the highest grade materials for everything, but the car would be super expensive and nobody would buy it. The practice of (automotive) engineering is making compromises in the right places so the product performs well while still being competitively priced.

I don't think it's just cars either. Over the past couple decades more and more things are being made overseas for the sake of saving money. A lot of things aren't made like they used to..

In fact, I find that BMWs in general don't feel as solid as Porsche (IMO is probably the most solid build) and MB (my C63 doors closed like a bank vault).

Any thoughts or comments?
what do you mean by "less solid and sturdy"? Perhaps the difference is difference in suspension systems from the e46 versus the f30, and the "sturdiness" you think you felt in the e46 was more road feel you may have felt in the e46 versus the f30. In reality, though, I think the f30 is much more sturdier than the e46. My .37cents

the best way to test how well your car got screwed together is 1) getting somebody to shut the door while you are in the car. 2) Drive on bumpy roads 3) my favourite: Put on a bass heavy song on and feel the bass throughout the car. Its almost like echo location for finding weak spots. My 3 passed all the above tests with flying colours.

He means the way the door and structure feels. C'mon guys lets be honest with ourselves, the F30 doors do in fact have a lighter feel to them when you close them. Very Lexus-Japanese-like. It's really not a big deal since the body is suppose to be 30% more rigid over the E90, albeit, my F30 loaner had a shit ton of rattles.

Enthusiasts have bragged about German "solidity" in BMW doors for decades so of course we are going to make note of something so simple

Thank you!

The doors are light as shit like Honda civic doors. A worker of mine opened the door she made a comment about my door being so light. Even the 5 series doors are light. Just go close and e class or c class door and right away you'll realize how shit our doors are. And yes it does matter when you pya $65K for a car

for me 50% of enjoying the car is how it looks. I can't waste $50k+ on a car that looks like shit. This is where the F30 shines. Great new look and you know it will look top notch till the next 3 comes out 6 years later.
