Even if it does not qualify for totaling, but I think it will, you need to push for it. It can be fixe d but there will always be little things wrong with it that if you are particular will drive you crazy. If they push hard to fix do not leave the shop with the car. Go for a ride with the shop and tell them it does not feel right. And you feel unsafe.

Glad you are OK. These cars are amazing in crashes. But not sure they are meant to be crashed multiple times.

Good luck and keep us posted

If the insurance insists on fixing it, take the car to a BMW CCRC to have it fixed. I see one of two things happening....

1) Insurance goes along and you will get a repair up to BMW spec. After the repair, you should also take a inspection drive to check for anything...like what bily said

2) Insurance will total the car after seeing the price tag of the repair.

The verdict is in... My insurance company thought it "might" be repairable and wanted a body shop to look at it. Luckily, the other party's insurance accepted liability shortly after and they decided to total it out. They felt it was not repairable and "wouldn't have felt right trying to fix it". Although I'm not sure if my comments to their adjuster regarding "needing a diminished value payment" or requiring "all BMW parts to keep the warranty valid" helped get them to that conclusion.

+1

It's not that pillars can't be replaced but getting them off the car is the trick. Car makers used to spot weld or rivet main componets of the chassis but now seam welding or expoxying is becoming more common in order to stiffen the chassis and reduce noise. A spot weld can be drilled out. A laser welded seam? A cut?

If the repair is 55-60% of the car's value, write off. If the damage is mainly cosmetic with air bags, new door, fender, lower control arms, maybe the strut, etc. Roughly 15-20k.

If you have the choice write it off. After major damage even with excellent repair the car will likely develop all sorts of weird problems. The shock of impact often disturbs componets in weird ways in my experience

Good luck and glad to hear you're ok.

In addition to A+B pillars, you also need to see if the bottom frame is bent. If it is, they can straigten it up but im sure it will comromise the rigidity of the frame.

In my opinion it looks totaled. As others have said, 50-55% of car value means insurance will total it.

Side impacts are the worst... Luckily you didn't have any passengers or he/she would have had a very bad time. That looks like at least 10 inches of protrusion in the passenger cabin. Even with the torso airbag, that's a serious impact to handle.

I'd say it's totaled by the looks of it. Here, I've seen cars with a lot less damage than yours which have been declared "totaled".
My stomach flipped when I saw that, obviously our wives all sit in that seat while we're driving

Anyway, glad you're OK OP!

You have a great attitude about the whole thing. If there is A-pillar damage, that could total the car.

just no way to tell from these pictures. it depends on the sub frame really. if it is tweaked then yes other wise a couple pillars replaced and a new door or two some paint and pieces and you will have a car again. I know that isnt what you might want to hear sorry.

Glad it worked out for the OP. It's impossible to make a clear case for totalling or not from the original pictures. The fact that the windshield is intact means that any firewall/A pillar damage that might have occurred was minor. It looks like the dead center of the door took the brunt of the impact and everything else is superficial. Given that fact, the car looks to have done pretty well. Yes, a passenger would have had the door panel whack their leg, but it appears that the rocker and seat base are still fine. It would have been far worse had the rocker moved. I'm fairly confident this car will be repaired and back on the road before too long.

Glad you're OK and glad to hear that the insurance totaled it already.

Like what bavarianx said, you have a great attitude towards what happened. I'd be furious myself.

Thanks! I thought it was a needed bit of humor for a more serious subject.

The other party's insurance company totaled it out. The adjuster claimed that he "wouldn't feel right having it fixed." Also, he mentioned that the floor seemed to buckle a bit and that the base of the passenger seat was completely damaged.

Thanks! I can't be all that pissed considering 1) I walked away from it and 2) I had the M3 on order a month before this wreck happened! Getting full retail value (inclusive of sales tax and fees!) for the car is certainly not bad when considering the hassle of a private sale or trading it in.

Yeah, there is no way that car could have been fixed for even 100% of the value of an equivalent, undamaged car. Too much goes into these things to just "put frame rails and some body panels back on." Hell, paint alone runs in the thousands.

Glad everyone was OK.

My wife got blasted in the right front by a guy, in a borrowed car, who wasn't paying attention and ran a red light. Not all incidents are preventable, but it pays to be extra vigilant when accelerating through a green light to make sure the other traffic is stopping or has already stopped.

Good thing you're safe looks like quite the impact Around here they say if the airbags went off, it's pretty much totaled. (insurance cost wise)
