New iDrive with M Performance carbon interior

Hi guys,

I am considering getting the BMW M Performance Carbon interior trim to replace the gloss black and I have seen some references that the iDrive controller itself is replaced. As I am getting the new iDrive Touch controller, I would like to know whether this is true or not as obviously this will require a parts change.

Cheers,

Simon....

Hello mate, your question is somewhat ambiguous so hopefully this is what you meant.

Given what I've seen, the IDrive controllers are different sizes and shapes so I would expect the trim pieces would be shaped differently around the controller. Therefore they would be different parts with different part numbers.

Hope that helps.

Thanks HFW003, I wasn't aware the shape of the controller itself had changed too. The video I have watched that showed how to install the kit gave me the impression that a new IDrive controller 'top' piece was included, so I assumed you needed a new kit for the MY14 version. I was going to pre-order and get it changed over for delivery, but may wait and see.

I take back what I originally wrote mate.

It seems as though the actual trim piece around the IDrive is the same and just the size of the knob has changed. I've also looked on realoem and they do appear to be the same.

If you look at the attached pic it certainly seems the surround of the controller is the same size as the "old" one.

Thanks for the update. I still don't get why it appears that you replace the controller during the install though. Oh well, time will tell. Maybe I'll ask in the Yanks forum, maybe someone's done it already. Was going to buy Minijets off him, but he ain't talking to me.

Cheers, appreciated.

I'm not sure where you got your info on changing the controller mate. The entire trim piece just pops off. Like for Like.

Minijet, is having a break as he is changing jobs so maybe he hasnt access to a computer?

HFW003, I formed that opinion after reading this thread http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=698981, particularly the photo's showing the kit apparently coming with the IDrive controller.

Simon,

Thanks for giving me an "in" for my first post

I have just placed my order on a 328i and have been looking at the option of updating to the M Performance Dash. In my travels I came across this post http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=698981 which should answer your question.

If you scroll through the photos you will see that part of the replacement process is to unscrew the iDrive controller from the existing console piece and put it in the new one. One of the early pictures does make it look like the iDrive controller is included in the dash kit but it is not, you re-use the one in the car.

Hope this helps.

It's the same thread as the one I posted above

Okay, I see now that it does appear that's the case. You can see why I was confused though

Anyway, HFW003 thinks that the IDrive (damn Apple, I keep wanting to type iDrive) controller in the MY14, with the Touch wheel, is a different shape. So, I think it will be worth waiting to see if it is before ordering one that will only fit an MY13 model.

Sorry, welcome and thanks anyway!

Simon....

Oops, missed that, thanks. Makes sense. After all, why would you change one part's shape from one release to another for no good reason. Let's leave that to Canon with DSLR battery grips, shall we?

I installed the CF kit in my car recently. I will tell you it looks great and is a huge improvement over any of BMW's stock int. kits. The I drive controller is a simple swap out from the old center console cover to the new. I think it was 4 screws and you do not even need to unplug it. Takes all of 5 mins to switch over. From the pics you posted, the new I drive controller while different in the size of the knob/controller, looks to be the same exact shape as the older models. The only difference I see is the knob itself but where the unit comes through the center console peice looks exactly like mine. Good Luck and enjoy your new ride.

Many thanks, I'm seeing if I can buy locally at on-stealer pricing

Got a quote from my dealer today: "$1,702 fitted". Told them not to bother and ordered off SouthernBM.

Wow that is a crazy price. While I understand we are in different countries that still seems a bit much. I paid 670.00 shipped US. Install myself which took all of 20 mins. It really is a simple install so don't be afraid to do it yourself.

1bad335, your comment 'that is a crazy price' is often used down here! If only there wasn't a LHD vs RHD difference between us, there would be a LOT more being purchased from the US.
