One main difference between the evo (I also owned one) and the BMW is the level of encryption in the BMW ecu. Essentially the evo ecu was "open source" insofar as it was easy to get in and make changes. BMW locks theirs down so tight it takes special programming skills just to get in and see what's happening.

Everything with the evo felt like mitsu intended people to race them - from the ease of getting negative camber in the suspension, to the brakes, to the seats, to the ease of stripping the interior. It made for fun modifying experiences! BMW is just a bit different...
Completely agree. Had an Evo as well that was modded and tracked. Much more easy and cheap to mod. When giving that up and purchasing this car I decided I will be keeping my f30 (328i) as stock as possible. My only mods might be msport grills lol.

Stage 3 - $2,199 (oil cooler required)

Not cheap by any means... However, it will be a reflash (rather than piggy-back) and Dinan backs theirs by matching BMW's factory warranty (4yr/50,000 miles).
When and how much we shall expect on 328i?

I had decided to try to keep my 328i as close to stock as possible as well. (My previous car was a 07 GTI with Borla exhaust and APR Stage 1.) But I'm slipping I just order the BMS Tune yesterday and have been looking at the exhaust threads. I see that Borla is coming out with a 328i exhaust which has me very interested.

Here is an very interesting and detailed chart comparing the various tunes offered for the e90 335 N54: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=374508

I suspect many of these companies will eventually offer a tune for F30.

You guys who have the BMS tune, you have been disconnecting the battery first, right?

I figure the battery is closer to the rear bumper and in front of the little storage tub. Never had to locate it before hehe.

$150 for a “custom tune” sounds a little too good to be true! Dyno tuned? Data-logging and having the car remotely tuned? Was there any hardware required?

Eh, I really wouldn't call a sub-$400 piggy-back that yields appx. +40whp over-charging. I'd actually go so far as to say it's an excellent deal.

The BMW-tax does hit hard in some areas though, such as authentic Euro or JDM aero & exhausts. If you compare material cost to retail cost it's clear they're selling their name, and people still love to pay for it.

Dude wtf.

My N20 is not the same as pictured in the install pics from BMS.

I swear based on the pic I took, I actually remember seeing on the N26. I thought manuals were N20, autos and certain markets were N26. Maybe mine is later production(7/12) and they switched over to the N26?

Here are my pics:

In the install manual, the first sensor I need to tap is right next to the oil cap.

Well here is mine, no sensor next to the cap:

I have this feeling I have an N26 lol.

edit: Terry confirmed-It's an N26...Or, it's an N20 and they have switched to using the electric solenoid from the N26.

Yes, I read about this. For MY2013, electric solenoid in the N20. I understand you just leave the JB1 solenoid connector disconnected.

Looking forward to your review of the JB1.

My review is a bit stunted.

I am on 235 width snow tires. The car makes enough power where the traction control is intervening quite often.

The power is noticeable. Most so in lower gears and part throttle, less so at wot in 6th.

It is not as drastic as my APR tune for my CC but that went from like 12psi to 18 and cost $600 on sale.

For $300 the results are quite good. If I was to spend $1000+ on a true tune and not a piggy back, I would have higher expectations.

I can say it pulls equal to the 335 I had for a week. When I get my production exhaust put on, results should be even better.

I also wonder how equipped the stock intercooler is at combatting heat soak.

Anyone have an update about whether we will see an N20 tune from Dinan?

Talked to Dinan the other day, they actually own an F30 328i and 335i and are working on it, but they can't crack the encyrption on the ecu. And they don't make piggybacks either, so it's just a waiting game to see if they will be able to crack it.

nice!

so i have a question, when buying Dinan stage 1, do you just have to pay the price difference when you upgrade to stage 2? or is that going to be another "x" amount of dollars?

i hope i typed that out right

Only the upgrade! They didn't even charge me labor last time I upgraded my software in a different car.

Thanks for the update.
I am sure if they can make stage 1 for my friend's 2010 550i GT that it won't be too long.

Well, aside from the fact that sales has no idea what they're talking about, they told me the F10 uses the old encryption algorithm as the e9x. That's why they were able to make a tune for the 5 series so easily. The F30 is completely new...which is the main problem. I have a BMS tune right now, but if the Dinan is good, or if M perf makes one, that would be much more ideal.

^May I ask why you think it would be more ideal than the BMS tune? Thanks

That is basically the same thing they told me four months ago, except they suggested it was only a matter of time. It is unbelievable how long it is taking for aftermarket stuff on the F30. I'd love to see the APR guys get involved. They do an awesome job on VW/Audi software. For $699, my previous Mark VI GTI went from 200 hp and 207 lbs of torque to 250 hp and 300 lbs torque. The car accelerated like a bat out of hell.

Yep didn't see the updates on this thread and had emailed Dinan. Was told they will be sorting out parts for both the 335 and 328. The last thing was they were in development and to sign up for the newsletter so that I could be advised when it becomes available.
I am happy to wait.

Yea, I', pretty satisfied with my BMS tune in the meantime though. But I'll probably switch to Dinan or M Perf if they ever get released.
