F30 OEM - Space Saver Spare Kit

Hi all,

I recently bought the OEM space saver tire kit from a local dealer. My summer tires are 19" and winter tires are 18". This kit is a 17" tire.

Just wondering if there is any risk to the drivetrain by running this spare tire if I need to?

Thanks.

With the xdrive all 4 wheels are supposed to be within 1% of the same diameter of the rest. But I doubt if you go 1.1% different your transfer case will explode. If you calculate that difference of your donut though it is probably significant.

Can you drive at low speeds for a small distance .. maybe, idk.

There are reports out there of people even getting a new tire shaved down so it matches the other 3 worn ones.

I'm with you though, it really sucks they don't design for a full size spare in the well... [not to turn this into another run flat hate thread, but seriously, stupid]

Well, I wouldnt plan to drive more than, say 50-100km at a time, and I am hopefully never going to use this at all.

I am guessing they wouldn't be selling these kits for these cars if there was a significant risk of damaging the transfer case... anyway, looking forward to more opinions on this.

Sounds like you're referencing the rim diameter, not the overall wheel size. The sidewall of the tire should be taller to make up for the lesser diameter of the rim. If the overall wheel size is the same as the others you should be fine.

OEM F30 (part# 36112159861) spare tire should give no problems to your cars AWD system. 17' applies to the rim but total wheel diameter is supposed to be within the acceptable size range of any F30 wheel. I believe it is 135/80R17.

The rim size doesn't matter, the diameter of the tire does. As you go larger with the rim size you go smaller with the aspect ratio, which leaves the tire diameter relatively unchanged.

^ THIS

as long as the sidewall height makes the overall diameter match the other wheels/tires, then it's fine

Awesome, thanks all.

I bought the kit from the dealer after doing some research. It comes with a bag which tethers to the mounting points in the trunk to make sure it doesn't move around. I'd definitely recommend it for a clean solution.

Garage List
Another important aspect you overlooked is whether the wheel will physically clear the brakes

Back in the E9x days, most came with 17" wheels std and 18" was optional

Now it seems that 18" are std with 19 & 20 optional

I carried the 5 series donut spare (as many did) on my E92 328iX (never actually HAD to use it) overall diameter of wheel/tire was fine for xdrive AND it cleared the brakes (I did a dry install to ensure it did) But my brakes were the std brakes and not the optional larger performance brakes

So make sure to test fit the wheel 1st to make sure it clears all braking components 1st before you find out the hard way some day...

In the US the E90 came standard with 16 inch wheels and the F30 comes standard with 17 inch wheels. In Europe and probably elsewhere some F30s come standard with 16 inch wheels.

Yup, mine are the standard brakes for 340i so shouldn't be a problem.

Just buy another rim/tire set that matches your current setup and put it in the trunk if you drive long distance. In town, you will most likely just get towed to where you can get your tire replaced or fixed.

In addition, insurance plans usually have roadside assistance. I also have a matching spare in the trunk. Plus, I'm not going to go on long trips without a matching spare in the trunk. I'd rather spend money on a wheel/tire combo that matches my current setup than a spare that doesn't.

A matching spare would take a lot of space and is heavy.
Probably close to 40 pounds.

BTW, does anyone know how heavy is this European spare tire kit is?

A matching spare is more like 50 pounds, and is nearly twice as wide as a compact spare, so on those long trips where you don't want to be without a spare you're losing a lot of luggage space. The compact spare is around 30 pounds. It's also ludicrously expensive, but that's the BMW tax for you.

Yes, I have lost my whole trunk. Good think I have the back seat for luggage and no kids. I have thought about getting a luggage rack for the roof because of this. I have also thought about looking for better jack/wheel options. I just happen to have an extra rim so it will be the spare.

I can't find this part for the spare tire, mentioned above (3.5 years ago) - "OEM F30 (part# 36112159861)"

I use get bmw parts dot com, have been for a long time. Trying to search for space/saver/spare etc, no luck that way either. Was it discontinued? Is there an equivalent part number now? I want to carry a donut. Thank you.
