I'm sorry, I misunderstood in that case

Kinda wondering, though, doesn't it come standard on?

Do you get the chirp in aftermarket alarm systems?

I think it's because cars costing a quarter of this price come standard with alarms.

Precisely. And it's standard in Europe. It just seems such a basic, fundamental feature these days that it wouldn't occur to me that any car wouldn't have an alarm fitted as standard.

That actually varies from country to country

In Belgium the alarm is standard on the 328i and 335i
But not on the 320i, 316d, 318d, 320d or 320d ED (Efficient Dynamics).

In the Netherlands and Germany on the other hand the alarm is a separate option on all models.

Fair enough - in that case apologies, I should just have been specific said it's standard in the UK rather than assumed it was also the case for the rest of Europe without checking. It's odd, we seem to get far more things as standard in the UK than elsewhere, and some options are considerably cheaper. I guess it's a question of what people in different markets expect.

I get loud enough audible feedback from my E90's locking mechanism. Quite loud as many of you know. Works for me. Hoping the F30 is the same.

This makes perfect sense. I do not think your comment was in any way inappropriate, just intriguing.

It mostly has to do with requirements of local motor insurers. In UK, due to rampant crime involving motor vehicles in the early 90's, Thatcham (which is a research centre founded by British Insurers) tested & categorised a large range of security devices, without which either a quotation will be refused or premium very expensive. This forced car makers to incorporate approved devices as standard fitment.
For example in my local market, a few yrs ago nearly all policies stipulate compulsory fitment of alarm system (again due to rampant theft of prestige vehicles in the early 90's for smuggling to other countries), so BMW fits alarm as standard across the whole range. From abt 3 years ago, local insurers changed the terms & the word "alarm" was changed to "electronic anti-theft device" (a term open to interpretation). Local importers sensing opportunity to make more money so alarm is no longer standard, only the most basic immobiliser remaining as standard.

Can't say I've noticed it.

Whatever the reason, you just don't hear cars chirping much in the UK! But I always notice it when I am in the States & Canada.

Never noticed that when I was in the UK either. Mind you it's not universal here. My last car only beeped if you pressed the lock button twice in succession.

Does anyone have any idea how expensive and difficult an alarm install would be at the dealer? I just took delivery of a 2012 328i sport line yesterday and I did not think to verify the presence of an audible alarm system (as was said before, this is standard on many vehicles). The car has the indicator lamp on the rearview mirror, but no alarm.

With the F30 328i if you don't order it from the factory then there is no way the dealer can add it on. The wiring is not there. Prior to the LCI E90, no 3 series came standard with an alarm so they shipped all of them pre-wired to be later added at the dealership if the customer wants it.

Not sure about the F30 (still waiting for production), but on the E90 it was actually a dealer installed option. The kit came with the alarm unit and a different coverplate for the overhead lights (to unmask the motion sensors). All of the wiring was already pre-installed at the factory so it only took an hour of labor and a code update to activate it. The alarm unit mounts in the left wheel well on the both E90 and F30, so the wiring may already be in place.

I'll find out tomorrow and I'll post the dealer's response.

I didn't find out anything today. The dealer says he has asked the service manager to look into it. That probably means no.

I'm more than sure the wiring is not there for a dealer install. When BMW allows the customer to dealer install certain things i.e. satellite radio, alarms, etc... it is always stated on the list of options when you run the vin. F30s and I believe E90s after 09 were no longer this way. If you don't order it from the factory then the dealer can't install it with preexisting wiring. Now I am not saying that you can't get it at all, it's just that you're going to have to add probably a non oem alarm.

Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. He said he would call me when he finds something out.

Interesting finding when alarm equipped: if one opens the car (remote key) when approaching car (hello status) and then decide to to go away from the car as if you have forgotten something eg (still in hello status), the car "chirps" and turning lights blink (like sweet exiting dog tail) to alert you (that the car is open and expecting you...). So it seems remote key signal strength is already monitored as soon car opening is activated....

Bump--- So I just realized this today after a week with my new BMW that the car won't "beep" when locking, because It did not come
With an alarm?? Something as simple as a Beep from The horn when locking is standard On almost every car out there. Regardless it's too late now, but is there a way to 1)either have the Oem alarm installed or 2)be able to wire it so that when the car locks the horn beeps?
If anyone has any new info they have obtained I'd sure like to know. Thanks
