Not sure if this was discussed in a different thread but how is the performance of the run flat all seasons in winter that come with the F30? This is will be my first year driving in the Canadian winter and not sure if I should invest in some tires.

What are some good options available and are people going for run-flat winter tires or normal winter tires?

I would get a set of dedicated blizzaks.

You will enjoy driving in the snow, the car will be unstoppable... The difference is night and day.

all depends on whether you drive mostly locals or highways, any hills on your daily drive that that are steep which will then become very slippery in winter conditions. Obviously, dedicated winters are the proper way to go but if you want to save some $, then all season may be your compromised solution.

The issue with xdrive with all season tires is drivers are way too confident of their awd vehicle and the result of driving a bit too fast & thinking it will grip on any road surface conditions.

I am going to buy a set of RFT winters for sure for my F31. I have had a dedicated winter wheelset here in Canada for many years and I would never run A/S tires - well, maybe on the west coast.

I would rather not be stranded with a flat in the winter without a spare. Options are limited. First I am going to wait and see what BMW releases for their winter package in September and go from there.

Going through BMW for winter packages is a total rip-off! Yes the wheels will be original BMW products, but you can get the same tires at any other tire shop.

I'm not really worried about a flat tire in winter. A good, dedicated winter tire should last you well into your 4th winter and by that time, it is time to change them anyway. I also have the BMW assist in case there is an emergency and I need a tow truck.

your in toronto i would just stick with all season cause you have xdrive. my dads been doing fine with his x5 stock all season in the ottawa weather

You can have the best technology in the world but you're only as good as your weakest link. Anything < 7c and as turn into hockey pucks. You wont be able to stop on a dime any longer. What's your deductible? $500 maybe how much would an accident increase your insurance premiums? How much is a set of 4 tires? Doesn't seem that much if you have a car for 4± years. never said xdrive would help you stop. im stating that ottawa has worse winters then toronto. and my dads all season is doing fine in ottawa winters. just my opinion

I ordered 400M rims from the US and am getting Blizzak LM60 here in YEG.

Gonna run it square 225/45-18 on all.

Getting the 400Ms through a US dealer and iND. They ordered them and got in 5 days.

I am not running RFTs for winter. Not worth it, too heavy and a pain to fix. Had same tires on my M3 for 4 years and had 1 puncture. I ordered a mobility kit and will just take it as it goes. RFT tire risk is just that, risk. I live in a decent area and have a short I commute.

Dealers here will get them at $680 a piece. That's crazy money.

I ran Blizzaks on my RWD 335 for years in Ottawa - highly recommended. The cornering and stopping are key. Ordered rims and tires from Tire Rack - delivered to my door - under $2000 IIRC.

This year I swapped my back to my Conti all seasons in a bit early (spring break) for the 335 and we had one last snow fall - scary.

I didn't do RFTs - way too expensive. Just kept a can of goop and a compressor in the trunk.

I'll be swapping out the 225-45s for 225-50s for the F30 this fall - the rims fit according to the forum.

I've been using Blizzak LM-60's on my 335 along with a set of dedicated winter rims. No xdrive here, didn't want it!

Winter doesn't stand a chance against my 335. My car would be an ice sled without the Blizzaks. But it is (almost!) a tank with them on. Also, you might want to consider the Blizzak WS-70 dedicated winter tires for slightly better ice and snow traction compared to the the LM-60 performance winter tires.

Nokian Hakka's are also an excellent choice for winter tires.

I would definitely suggest a set of winter tires. I am running a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin runflat winters on my F30 and was fortunate that I was able to reuse the style 162 reps from my old E90.

I had LM60 on my M3 and they are ok. AWD will make a difference in my F31 and some better clearance. The M3 is a clearance disaster.

The WS70 are certainly better but its dry cold road performance is not as good.

I used Blizzak WS-70's which may have been a slight overkill in TO, but if you ski or go to Ottawa ( I do both ), it performed well. By well I mean as good as expected in snow that "falls" into your car as you open the door. I mean snow that is above the center line of your hub caps and snow that causes your kidney grills to block up.

And I mean well for a RWD MSport, which means you won't get stuck, but you have to drive accordingly to stay out of trouble. My old e90xi felt "unstoppable" but I never faced as severe weather in it.

8 or 8.5 on the rear? I've got 8.5 so I wasn't sure if 225 was enough

I'll likely be doing the Blizzak WS for the 328 -the little bit of extra edge in the really sloppy stuff over the LMs. BTW - anyone want a lightly used set of LMs (4 seasons - maybe 20k on them) - 17" 225-45 non-run-flats - Ottawa area - you're welcome to them - the dealer's likely charging me an environmental disposal fee when I swap them off for some 225-50s. They should be good for at least 1 more season, or perhaps 2. Just ping me.
