Rear vibration (out of nowhere)

So I have a '15 F36. I drove it to the airport and noticed that there was a vibration coming from the car. Not through the steering wheel, or when I brake, but just the whole car was vibrating. Almost like flat tires...

So I checked the tire pressures, all OK. I drove the car the day before and didn't notice anything. Then tonight I drove back from the airport (after a few days away) and same problem. I closed the windows and turned off anything that makes noise. I think its the passenger side rear of the car.

The tires look fine, pressures are OK. I never hit anything... wtf!?!

Figured I'd see what you knowledgable people think, while I wait until Tuesday for the next available appointment at the dealer.

Did you hit any large bumps while driving before this started? You may have lost some wheel weights throwing one or more of your wheels out of balance.

Check the wheel lugs. If they weren't properly torqued they can loosen.

They could be off balanced, I know I had a similar problem at 60 mph or above but it turned out ice froze on the rim so the balance got offset. It's possible one of the balancing weights fell off

Does it rattle? Did you fold the rear seats?

+1 on wheel weights, and if it you are not feeling it in the steering wheel, it's probably one of your back wheels.

Get a flashlight and look inside the wheel rim and see if you can see where any weights used to be. Also, take a look at your treads, you might have picked up a large screw.

hmm thanks guys...

it's definitely coming from the back right. it's like a wop/wop/wop/wop/wop bouncing noise when driving. kinda loud too.

I checked and don't see any places where balance is "missing" but that doesn't mean brake dust didn't cover the spot quickly. There is only a 1/2" weights on the rear-right rim however the rear-left rim has about 3" of weights. So maybe one did fly off.

I am just concerned because I hear a clunk again. I checked under the car as best I could and didn't notice any damage but couldn't see much.

Set my appointment for Tuesday - so we'll see. Does warranty cover the balancing if that's the problem? I only have about 9K miles on the car.

update: drove it to work today and the issue got much worse. drove home after and it was almost un-drivable. felt the like whole rear end was going to fall out. clunking and sideways movement, not the the wheel.

Got home and called BMW Roadside Assist and had it towed to the dealer... FUN FUN!!

All good suggestions - I like the loose lug nut one. Could also be a bubble on the inside.

The symptoms fit, especially where it gets progressively worse. Ask me how I know.

i hope not but kinda do. do because then there is no big repair. but not because i look like an idiot and that's gonna cost me.

but if that's the case why would it just start all of a sudden and get worse in a couple days. i dunno doesn't sound right. haven't changed anything with my rims in months...

ugh.

The first accessories I added were a tire repair kit, inflation pump, jack and lug wrench. With luck I'll never need to use any of them when on the road, but for sure if I didn't have them I'd end up needing them.

verdict is in... broken wheel stud/missing bolt which probably caused the the other bolt to come loose. They of course blame someone else. They say it's whoever removed the rims. Which did happen when the rims were sprayed black a few month ago.

I call bullshit how it could be related but I don't really have much ground to stand on. So $170 later... I'm not a happy camper but at least it's fixed.

Grease monkeys love their air guns, and they're well known to over-torque bolts. A good mechanic uses a torque wrench. With one bolt gone it's easy to imagine the resulting imbalance to vibrate the others loose, especially if said monkey didn't tighten all the other bolts sufficiently.

Awesome, we were right......@Billfitz and I

We were both experienced with the feeling of loose wheel/bolts, lol

Despite the $170; the important thing is that the wheel didn't come off completely. That would have cost you MUCH more in mechanical and cosmetic damage and/or even personal injury.
Glad you were able to figure it out.

just wish it didn't get so bad so quickly. crazy how no problems turned into something crazy in a couple days (after MONTHS since having the wheels removed/replaced) I would have loved to figure this out on my own and just go to a tire shop for $20 but I guess expense comes with owning an expensive car, huh?

Once the bolts loosened enough to be noticeable they could have come off completely within fifty miles of driving.

Two of us here correctly diagnosed it before you took it in.
