We will get the sport trans shifter swap done and coded once we both have all the parts. Will be a great mod for sure.

Everytime I take my car to the dealer and get a loaner I say..."wonder if they will notice if I...take this part and swap it with my pre lci." haha

Update, just ordered all parts needed to retrofit paddles onto my steering wheels. Going to get the car coded this weekend and hopefully in a few weeks tackle the paddle install.

Installed my IND side markers, looks pretty good.
OEM M performance spoiler still sitting in my closet...will need to get that on sometime soon.

Well over the weekend made some progress on the paddle install.

First and most importantly, I would have had a HELL of a hard time doing this install myself. If it wasnt for Roll_The_Dice (Andy) and his help, tools, and time...I would likely of screwed it up. Cant thank that dude enough...also at the same time, I had a chance to check out his carbon fiber wrap work in his garage and I must say....VERY impressed. If you want something wrapped in REAL carbon fiber...he should be your go to guy..

On to the install, see below pics. Took about 2 hours or so? Taking the wheel off was easy. Hard part was drilling the stock M-sport wheel so we could put a screw into the wheel to hold the paddles on. We had to try a few different angles until we got it lined up right with the OEM backing plate and everything sat flush. Another issue we had, a 2nd hole/dimple needed to be made in addition to the hole for the screws for the paddles to seat properly in the backing plate. After a few tries, we finally got the paddles to sit flush, and the wheel was put back together. Finally, we ran a new wire from the SW to the FEM, you can see in the pic we taped it to a plastic piece to help push it through the back of the console. Everything was hooked up, put back together...and now I have paddles!! All parts used were OEM and it looks 100% stock. No way you can tell the difference (other than looking at my shift knob).

Going to get it coded next week I hope, and that will be the final confirmation that it works....but I dont see why it wouldnt.

Looks good Scott, but of course I saw it in person! haha Don't let me forget to make your light switch work with euro fogs next time. Let me know how you like the paddles and 2TB trans after Gabe codes it.

Very nice install on the paddle shifters. I have a 2014 335i Luxury line and am thinking about adding the paddles as well. I noticed in the DIY threads instructions that it only called for one wire connection behind the wheel and to the footwell despite needing two of those wires. I also noticed that you spotted that same detail. What did you determine the 2nd wire was used for? I haven't seen or ordered these wires and I am hoping my car (like many others) has the wire already in place in the FEM but just in case, I will order the wires anyway. I figured I would ask you to see what you found as far as the 2 wires are concerned and whether only one was needed or if you used the two to extend the connection to the footwell.

By the way, did you get the car coded for the paddles yet? If so, are you enjoying them? I had paddles in a past Corvette but never used them but I still like the idea of having them in this car.

Thanks in advance!

Hey, thanks for the comment.

The wire part had me confused as well. So basically what you are buying is the end connections, one that goes into the SW electronics and one that goes into the FEM. You have to use basic electrical wire in between. So solder the two ends to the basic electrical wire to create one long wire with connections on both ends to bridge the SW and the FEM.

Thing about this car is when you code for paddles, it also changes how fast the transmission shifts. So it's a pretty cool feature.

No coding yet. Hopeful for tonight or sometime next week. The dude thay will be coding my car is super cool but we work different schedules and my kids at home take up alot of time as well. Adulthood...haha

Like Madmortar said, the 2 wires are needed with about 18" of wire in between the 2 soldered together to make one long wire. The reason 2 are needed are for the end connections that are used at the SW and at the FEM. The first time I did it I was confused too because no one said there should be a wire in the middle to make it longer...then I figured it out...and it made it easier to do on madmortars install, since we knew what we were doing at that point! haha

I am like you...I rarely use the paddles, but I love how they look.

Thanks to both of you for clarifying! This begs the question though. Why not just buy one cable, cut it and uses a longer wire between the two ends? Perhaps resistance of the added wire? The cables are cheap enough though and I can solder with my eyes closed.

madmortar,
I will be looking forward to your feedback once you get it coded. I've been itching to code mine as well. I bought the cable within a day or two of getting the car and my laptop is all setup with the software. I was going to code the M sport transmission settings and figured I would add the paddles to take further advantage of it. Cars can be a sickness! Especially when it comes to mods. I can never leave anything stock. With a couple days of getting the car I added the CF trunk spoiler and matching CF mirror covers. My car came with HK sound and I really want an upgrade to that as well as wheels. I can't stand the luxury line wheels nor do I like the suspension so that too is on my to-do list as well.

The mod struggle is real
I have some exterior mods I need to post on here that I have done lately!
Im happy with my M-sport suspension set up. Still back and forth on a tune and exhaust. More so a $$$$ issue as I bought the car telling myself i would not go overboard with mods due to the cost that comes with that!

You need two wires because each one only has one connector end. You buy the two, and supply the middle piece to create one long wire with connectors on both ends.

Ahh. That makes sense! I figured the cable had two connectors on it and that each end would have a different type of connector. I didn't realize that there was only one connector nor did I realize that the plug in the steering column and the plug in the foot well used the same connector on the wire side. Thanks for the clarification!

Will look forward to seeing your latest mods! Please post the pictures!

Got the car coded over the weekend and the paddles work!!
I really enjoy the control I have now that the paddles work, its alot more fun to drive on back roads in full manual mode. Also, the "sports tranny" shifts alot harder/quicker and makes for a much more sporty feel.

Very pleased.

Only thing that was strange is the car is suppose to downshift to lowest gear available if you hold the left paddle....and mine doesnt seem to do that?

i think if you hold your foot flat it downshifts once, but if you also hit the paddle then it drops to the lowest possible gear. if you're not on the throttle then it probably doesn't work.

Yea for me, it really comes down to money...my passion is still there. But a lot has changed since I had the GTI.

So its still not working. When I was driving around a loaner, I could hold the left paddle and it would downshift to lowest gear possible, regardless of throttle input. With mine, I cant get it to do it at all.

Wonder if something was missed in the coding?

dealer should be able to fix. i just remember seeing a nick murray video where he described that feature on his m4, hence my suggestion.

Hopeful to get a tint in the next few weeks.

Other than that...things are kinda of up in the air. I'd really like to find a used DINAN stage 1 N26 tune as my dealer is OK with that and now that I have the control I want with the paddles...I could use more power!

Wish list:
Red M performance brakes
Powder coat stock wheels gunmetal
AWE exhaust system
LCI LED Taillights

thats about it!

33% ceramic tint installed!! I think it looks great.

Spent Saturday morning (2 hours on interior) and ALL day Sunday (6+ hours on exterior) trying to get the BMW to look her best. Car still needs paint correction as when you go close, you can see swirl marks. Could also use some rock chip repair.. But regardless, she is very shiny and "wet' looking right now. I'm pleased... I need a DA polisher as this was WAY too much work to do by hand..

Inside:
Chemical Guys - Metro Wall Mount Vac N Blo Vacuum & Power Blower (this thing kicks ass...all the attachments it comes with makes cleaning so much easier).

Chemical Guys - Long Bristle Horse Hair Leather Cleaning Brush (Smells like a petting zoo...was worried it would cause my seats to smell like a horse...good thing the smell didnt attach itself to my car!)

Chemical Guys - Leather Cleaner & Conditioner Complete Leather Care Kit (seemed to work really good thus far! Car smells brand new)

Outside
(Washed using 2 bucket method with dirt traps)
Chemical Guys - Black Light Hybrid Radiant Finish Car Wash Soap
Chemical Guys - Ferret Wheel, Rim & Engine Brush
Chemical Guys - DeCon Pro Iron Remover and Wheel Cleaner (IMO this product is a waste of money)
Chemical Guys - Wet Mirror Finish Ultra Slick Gloss Magnifier
Chemical Guys - XXX Hardcore Carnauba Paste Wax
