Yes, BMWs have issues. But compared to all the other auto manufacturers, they are pretty up there. It's telling that from 2000-2010 Merc ranked consistently on the BOTTOM of the reliability list.
Well because you spend 100's of k's on a Ferrari doesn't mean it's any better than a 10,000 Kia engineering-wise. Big car makers such as VW, Hyundai, BMW, etc... have huge R&D budgets due to high volume sales. Ferrari doesn't. A modern Hyundai engine nowadays is a technological marvel that only a huge company with 1000's of engineers could produce. I'm sure they have more engineers on payroll than the entire Ferrari workforce. So in this context I'm not surprised to see Ferrari engines blow up on the highway because advanced lab tests weren't conducted on the glue.

I believe the build quality issues on these cars (the ones that become known anyway) are few and far between. If you want a relaibly built car, buy a Lexus. I am currently driving one and if I cared about it more, it would last me another 10 years (it's already 11 years old). But there are reasons people buy German over Japanese. However, if the Germans keep getting softer and the Japs keep getting sportier, the build quality issues may start to become more of a factor in people's decisions.

I have a 70k$ 2011 MB C63 AMG and a 55k$ 2013 BMW 335i. I would say the build quality for both is very comparable. I have had MANY cars in the last 20 years and I would say these 2 are amongst the best in terms of being rattle/creek free. May be I'm just lucky!

I will say this.f30 has 1/3 less leather on the door cards than the e90. They cheated there to cut I bet. Take a look at the part in front of the door handle. It used to be all leather there. Now it's plastic

You're lucky....but give your 335i sometime, I got creaks at the 5000 mark or so.
