This did not work for some reason. I got to the point where I had the car locked and window partway down. The valet key would not raise the window no matter how long I held it in the position to do so.

It's a self-resolving problem here on Oahu: take a new model BMW to your favorite surf spot, go out for a few hours and when you come back it will either be gone or you won't recognize it. I keep an old volvo beater as a surf car-over the last several years I've replaced door locks after being jammed with screwdrivers, broken windows, etc. but that's what it's for.

Very true. The old volvo had a valet key that worked in a pocket but it finally rusted away-I told one of my surfer son's to take apart one of the electronic keys and see if the key only part would work-which he did, with a hammer, and discovered it needed the electronics also to start the car. Now they lock the one good key in the car and surf with the remnant key which will unlock the car, so all is good.
