Send kris@modmynav.com an e-mail. He did mine and I'm pretty sure that it uses OEM parts and there is ZERO cutting of any wires. Plug and Play.

Here's his site........

If using OEM module, you must tap into at least 2 wires in car harness to make it work. Everything else can be wired to empty pins in existing connectors.

FreddyG, do you mind taking a good close up shot of the camera in trunk handle? I should be able to tell you if its OEM.

Looks good, but you definitely have an aftermarket trunk handle/camera. I suspect Kris still uses the OEM camera module and wires his camera to it. Saves ~$200 over OEM trunk handle with integrated camera.

hey did you get

OEM style rear camera
or
multimedia interface + rear view camera package for BMW idrive

the OME style rear camera states "*This camera won't do anything alone without interface module"

not sure what this interface module is?

also how difficult was the installation?

Interface module is a BMW part. Camera and iDrive are both interfaced to this module.

As Claykin stated, I got the package with both parts. You can't use one with out the other.

Kris installed ours and it works fine. Just make sure you set the jumpers properly or when you hit the voice command button on the steering wheel, the backup camera will come on. He reset them and it works like OEM now. It took him about two hours to do it, but he Really knows his stuff.

He sells both his own kit and the BimmerTech one. I chose his because I can turn it on while driving (good for getting tailgater's license plate numbers ).

Difference between OEM and aftermarket kit is the trunk handle/camera and type of cable going from camera to module. Module is same in all kits. Maybe your OEM module software version was mismatched to the rest of your car software version, when you had issue? There's no jumpers AFAIK.

What button do you press to turn on cameras while driving?

It's not actually physical jumpers (like dip/pin switches), it's a setting in the software that is accessed through the included remote. I wouldn't think that there is a mismatch because once the settings were changed, everything worked as intended.

I'd like to figure out a place to mount a front camera too. That would be great for judging parking blocks. If I had the M-Sport front end, then I know how I'd do it, but we have the Luxury model. I'll figure something out if I decide to pursue it more.

As far as turning the camera on while driving, if I hold the menu button down for two seconds, the camera comes onto the NAV screen. To shut it off, just hit any other button. To get it to show on a split screen, push the I-Drive controller back while the camera is on the screen.

Included remote? Like a wireless remote control? Interesting...

OEM camera is activated by pushing PDC button on dash. Not sure how cars with no PDC access the camera as the OEM setup requires PDC. Maybe using the Menu button is Kris's workaround. Interesting to see if the coding changes Kris made holds up once your car goes in for scheduled maintenance and BMW updates your modules.

It is fine. Our car has already had software updates and it works like new.

He didn't code our car. He installed the box, set things up using the remote and was done. So if he did code it, I guess he did it with the supplied remote.

The menu button is only needed if you want to see behind you when moving, otherwise the camera goes on when putting it in reverse just like OEM does. I think that it's the best non OEM option available, because it's plug n' play and works like OEM does.

If you're interested, give Kris a call. He can more than likely explain things better than I can.

What is this supplied remote? Can you post pic?

Something is missing from your explanation. I'll call Kris for details.

One thing I know for sure is that Kris's kit is not plug n' play. He won't ship to end users for self install.

I'll try to get a picture for you tomorrow.

E-mailing him would be best, as he can explain it better than I can. He's Very quick on e-mailing back too, which is a plus.

You do have to program the system with the remote, but I'm pretty sure that he could walk you through it. He also sells the BimmerTech kit, but I got his because I had originally wanted a front camera too, but we found no place to mount it.

Sorry if I'm not much help.

At this time Bimmertech kit (all OEM parts) requires rear PDC and Nav. I know Patryk is working on a solution for non PDC cars. Maybe non Nav too, not sure...
