Quick Q re: ordering 340i...

From the time you gave your dealer a deposit, how long did it take to get a VIN number with which to track your car? Going on 3 weeks for me. Thanks.

Completely depends on when your dealers/your allocation is. Seems like your dealer didn't have an allocation too close to when you ordered

I used broker. It was within a week to get my production number.

It was 2 days for my previous 328i.

It adds 3-4 weeks to the actual delivery timeframe, but it shouldn't add any time to get a VIN, which is created by the ordering system long before a vehicle actually enters production.

I keep my cars for a long time, so I like to get them the way I want them.

Do you have a production number? Until you have a production number you don't truly have an order. Some dealers will take a deposit to order a car for which they do not yet have an allocation. That can result in waiting a month or more just to get to the point of having an allocation to put in the order. Once a production number is issued an approximate date for production will also be issued. That date can be a matter of days to weeks after the order was placed.

As others have pointed out, that means your dealer doesn't have an allocation.

You should get your production # in a couple of days if there is an allocation.

On my most recent order (2015 F80) it was 6 days from when I gave my CC for the deposit to getting the reservation letter/production #

He did say he had to swap an allocation with another dealer. Not many xDrive cars ordered in SC I'm betting.

How can you tell if it's a SA car? And does the VIN come only from the dealer? Ordered three weeks ago, site says in production and has the car build online.

Call BMWNA. They gave me my VIN, less than a week after I placed my order / gave a deposit. I had a SA build as well.

Finalized my order on paper as to the options and price over email on a Monday. Rcv'd the VIN and production number on Wednesday. No deposit, just paid the MSD's & start up costs by CC when signing the papers about 2 weeks before it arrived at the Performance Center. Worked with a great board sponsor. So if you don't have your VIN yet, as someone mentioned, your dealer might not have had a slot.

Why did I go new? 1st was the desire to do Performance Center delivery. Then also, after my e39 was totalled, we had 2 Honda Accords over 6 years (both manual transmissions, long live the manual!!!!). One of my biggest gripes was that I was fine w/ the 1st one but wanted a sunroof. In the 2nd one, to get the sunroof, you're forced into an EX w/ a bunch of other options I didn't want and also seats that I hated. So getting back into a BMW, could've went w/ a CPO but to me, it was worth the price to spec exactly what I wanted, and leave off what I didn't.

Order what I want + euro delivery = many bucket list items checked

It's not the cheapest way to have a car but it's a great experience

That's exactly what he said! And I really wonder what options determine production? There has to be a science behind it.
