How to make your ASS wait
From page 21 of the F30 Powertrain "Technical training" document:
"1. Vehicle slows to standstill, e.g., at a red light 2. Immediately after the vehicle comes to a standstill (within one second) the brake pedal is pressed briefly, applying more force than usual, then immediately held with the usual brake pedal force 3. The engine continues running" The problem is that more often than not the engine shuts down immediately instead of waiting ~ 1 second so there is no opportunity to forestall shutdown. Is there some secret to making the ASS wait - perhaps having to do with the deceleration profile? I haven't noticed any pattern; it seems to wait or not wait at random. This is with an automatic trans. Last edited by Kev314; 09-01-2015 at 07:29 PM.. Reason: Additional info |

Unless you're planning on getting rid of the car in a few years i'd advise against using ASS at all.

Easy way is this....
I don't mind ASS -- most of the time. However if I know I am approaching a red light that will be changing soon or just stopping for a sec to make a turn and i don't want an engine shut down, i just flick the gearshift from "D" to "S". In "S" ASS will not engage and engine won't shut down. Once I get moving again, simply flick back into "D" |

Fuel savings for me in mostly city driving in the first 10k miles was nominal at best, and the actual use was annoying at worst. The balance of the two made it not worth it for me, so now mine is shut off for good.

The car will based on the timing know where exactly to stop the engine to ensure a quick restart - at least what I read in a motoring magazine a while ago.

Same here. I do notice an increase in mileage in the city when using it, but the loss of refinement just isn't worth it. They've got a long way to go to smooth out ASS.

The title is pretty funny though,

In my '14 Q5 TDI you couldn't even tell when the engine shut off unless you were the driver or were paying close attention on purpose. Startup when leaving a stop was so smooth you only noticed based on the engine noise returning. My F31 shuts off the engine before the car is stopped, jerking it to a halt and restart is a noticeable vibrating start up. But getting over 30MPG in stop and go city driving in a 4000lb AWD wagon is awesome enough that I can deal with this lack of refinement, and push for BMW to continue improving the system. LMAO

[QUOTE=Thumper333;18517891]I agree that they have a lot of room in the refinement range................but see no reason to not take advantage of the benefits now anyway.

Upon start up there is sometimes a vibe but often it is pretty smooth even though you can hear the starter motor doing its work, however briefly. Hard to know what's "real" and what's individual perception. |

yeah I find my system works well...only stops when the car is completely stopped and generally comes back on smoothly...the occasional start is shaky probably depending on where the car stopped in the cycle

Wonder what ASS would be in German? You would think they would check the English translation of the complete term as well as its acronym.
Decades ago my high school German teacher told of a marketing campaign in post war Germany. An American consumer products company had a spray on type deodorant that they wanted to introduce into West Germany. The bill boards were already up before someone realized that the product name, Mist, means manure. I suppose there are many stories like that. |

And I assure you, the jerk to a stop is real. I plan to have the dealer look into it at it's first service.

I press the brake pedal all the way down and then let a little pressure off to make my ASS wait all the time. Great for stop signs, right turns on red and when you know the light is about to turn green anyways.
When coming to a stop, make sure you don't bottom out the brake pedal, leave a little play for additional pedal application. When your vehicle is at a full stop, keep depressing the brake pedal until it's bottomed out, then let up a little pressure. |

Sounds excessive, maxing out the brakes like that and bottoming them out at every turn.
I turn ASS OFF, but at least with a clutch you can keep your foot down to avoid ASS, or mashing brakes.

I rarely use full brake force, I like to bring the car to a smooth, slow stop. Outside of a panic stop, I never bottom the pedal out. The ASS system still engages when I still have only a very light pressure on the pedal....and the car is still moving. This results in very jerky stops. In short, it is impossible for me to do what you describe as the car is off before it stops even moving. LOL

I think there is a bug in the system & will just have to work around it or risk the dealer messing things up trying to fix it. |
