EGR valve replacement

Just booked my car into BMW Wakefield for the winter wheel swap and they tell me it needs a software update and a new EGR valve under warranty (car is 12 months old). Anyone else heard this?

I think you're lucky they identified this pro-actively; normally you find out when being recovered from the side of the road or losing power.

My previous one had the EGR valve replaced under warranty at the "check" that they will do around the time of the first MOT.

Is that due to its use? I see it is low annual miles.

My car (318d) had the EGR Valve replaced when it was in for its first service in August, was flagged up as needing the EGR as a "Quality Enhancement" when I booked it in a couple of weeks previously.

No, they had a 2012 N47 engine 320d before and never had a days fault with it. The newer b47 engine had a EGR recall requested on them so they were rubbish to start with and seems the replacements aren’t much better.

Yes it's a common fault. I had my EGR changed on the 335d under warranty. There are a few threads on here where some were on their second or third valve as they seem to stick on a part with the exact same failing.

Maybe it would be cheaper to code the thing out if it failed out of warranty ?

EGR on/off was a single bit (0/1) toggle on edc15 ecu common rail, so I'd assume BMW edc17 will be the same.

Turn it off and you can sack off the cat.

Just the dpf then too.

I imagine these mods might get very difficult/illegal soon as MOT might try check to assure your diesel is as clean as it should be!

Mine (Sept ‘16 320d) has had a EGR related software update. Apparently the valve itself didn’t need replacing. Recalls are now being called ‘Service Enhancements’ ?!? How posh.

The software update has made my economy worse by a (man maths) estimate of 5-10%. This was before the drop in temperatures too. The instant consumption gauge when accelerating also seems way more sensitive than before. Most average accelerations for me now drop to c. <8mpg regardless of aggression. That didn’t happen previously unless I really planted my foot.

I asked if the software update was linked at all, to the emissions scandal, but they said no...

I had my EGR valve replaced, and the software update installed, around 6 weeks ago. Up until that point I was averaging a very healthy 45.5 mpg.

Since then, with the same driving on the Se roads and in the same traffic, I'm getting 41.4 mpg. it was never ever this low, even after picking it up as a new car.
