Question register a new battery with MHD

Hello,

My 2016 340xi needs a new battery and I’m looking to buy an aftermarket unit to replace the OEM battery.

The MHD app allows you to register a battery, but the user manual says that you should only do so if it’s the same size and type as the previous battery.

My question is: can I do the following (1) install a new battery, (2) code it with Bimmercode, and then (3) register it with MHD

My assumption is that by first coding the battery with bimmercode, the registration will be done correctly.

Thanks!

You code if the new battery isn't in the correct Ah range compared to the old. You always register.

Yes, I understand that, but my question is whether or not it is safe to use the MHD app to register my battery as long as I first code the battery using bimmercode

It turns out that the answer to my question is “no”

I guess I’ll just pay the $40 for bimmerlink

Bimmerlink is free. Bimmercode however does cost like $30 or $40 or something like that.

You're confusing the issue. Coding tells the car the Ah capacity of the battery you're installing, so that it neither under or overcharges it. Registering tells the car that it's a new battery, so that it doesn't over charge it when new nor under charge it as it ages, whatever its Ah capacity may be. Two different procedures that serve two related but nonetheless independent functions.

Good points! One question: does it matter if you code first and then register that respective battery? I understand you only need to code of the battery doesn’t meet the same specs as the one it’s replacing, but as long as you do both of those independent functions subsequently, does it matter which one is first?

It doesn't matter, as they're independent functions. But you don't want to dawdle with either. If I was to venture an educated guess I'd say the Ah rating is the more important of the two but only if the new battery is rated lower than the original. If it's rated higher no problem, and for that matter it might not even need coding. The options are 70, 80, 90 and 105. You code to the closest value no higher than the battery rating. If the battery is anywhere between 90 and 104 you'd code it to 90.
