Question Production numbers and tracking...

hello again everyone!

A quick question for yall...

I placed an order of my 2013 335i M sport on June 16th over the phone/emails and received the Vehicle Inquiry Report. When I asked for the production number, i was told the production number will be assigned by the end of July???
I thought that's pretty odd since many people are getting theirs within 2 weeks or so..

Also was told the car will be in the August production so I can expect to see mine sometime in September?? I thought the delivery time itself takes about 6 weeks or more.. am i wrong?

How long did you take to get your production number? and yours to be delivered??

I got my production number (it is actually on my VIR). My dealer is estimating a start during build week 27, but that may be a little optimistic... we'll see. If the dealer has an open allocation, they should be able to give you a production number pretty soon after taking the order. It will take some time before you can get production information from the BMW phoneline. It took a couple of weeks after I ordered mine before I could look up the production number on BMWUSA. Ask the dealer if you have a confirmed allocation.
Delivery time can take several weeks depending on which plant your car is coming from (Munich or South Africa).
The biggest delay once production is complete seems to be waiting at the dock.
I'm still anxiously waiting for the day when my car actually starts production (earliest start in beginning of July).
Good luck with the allocation!

Got a question: If I check my order via bmwusa.com, I saw the color is Alpine White, however, when I ask my CA to check from his system, it's showing Mineral White (the correct one). Is this something of a concern? My previous order had Alpine White but I changed the order to MW back in 06.22.12.

No worries, the VIR is the true story. The website lags behind.

Yeah, well actually no - you should always ensure the dealer has a production # available before beginning to negotiate; most definitely before signing anything or placing a deposit. First question should be: what's your allocation look like for MY 20__? Should be a printable list they have lying around (sales manager's desk.)

I realize this doesn't help you now.. But good to know so that you can approach them with that expectation.

Have them figure it out asap.. Like tonight or tomorrow, so that you know you're being taken seriously and have a reserved slot in the system. They can also move allocations from other dealerships if they don't have any more (dealer trade; they swap a car that's almost done with production and/or already on the way for a production # a few weeks out). I've seen this happen first hand.

gerbs...Simply wow...Much appreciated for ur input!

Well.. Just heard back from my CA saying they often sell each month's allocation pretty quickly...so my guess is they are trying to assign me for their unknown July allocation..?

Should i ask him for a dealer trade?

Just a random curiosity, does anyone know how many allocations (average) each dealers received?

Actually in production - with VIN!

Got my VIN today and was told the estimated (as in cross your fingers) completion date is July 6th. Wow - may have it for summer! Well, it's actually my wife's car, but she might let me drive it if I'm good.

2013 335xi M Sport, Arctic White, Red Coral, walnut trim, premium, technology, shades, mixed 400M 18's, sport auto trans w/paddles, dynamic handling (adaptive M suspension and variable steering), Harmon Kardon, cold weather, driver assistance and driver assistance plus. Ok, basically everything except the parking assistant.

Depends on the dealer, also it's proprietary information so don't expect them to give you hard numbers if you were to ask.

There happens to be A LOT more 328i allocations than 335i at first for the 2013, almost 5:1 ratio from what I've seen.

The biggest dealership in LA for example has 40+ 328i's for July production and only 3-4 335i's.

Another dealer has 10-15 328i's, and 6 335i's.

The 335i is much less popular by default (most 3 series consumers prefer the lessor model). So while it seems BMW is skimping on 335i's, the ratio makes sense. It's the same with the ActiveHybrid 3, there's (currently) only a few per month allocated to dealers.

The dealer trade route is a total pain from the dealer's perspective. It is much easier for them to wait on a new allocation set of production #s, especially if they already have your signature. It requires a healthy relationship with the regional manager who assigns allocations; and even then it's still a maybe as to if another dealer will spend the time to do it and manage the whole situation.

Doesn't hurt to ask, though.

thank gerbs! you are DA MAN!
sounds like you have a wealth of knowledge about BMW...true bmw enthusiast?

I didn't sign any papers or put any deposits yet. He asked me to put a $1K deposit but i hesitated to do so without a production number. I received the VIR over an email and not sure if it does mean anything..
but i hear ya.. guess i cant do anything at this time but wait patiently.

thanks again!

I placed my order on 12 June and got the production number the same day. My car just started production today (27 June). Estimated production completion is 5 July, then the long wait for shipping to Arizona.
Good luck with your production number!

BMW web site is not always correct.
My 330i show up as 325i. I almost die at work.

No, my 328i sportline is MY2013 which has "D" in the 10th digit of the VIN. Placed my order on 6/12(My Birthday). Production started on 6/25/2012 and is scheduled to be completed on 7/3/2012. Check your VIN, if the 10th digit is C, it is 2012. If it is "D", it is 2013.
