Water Leak into cabin?

Hey guys,

it rained heavily last night, and this morning as I was cleaning my interior, I noticed both rear passenger carpet (and floor) were really wet. Has anyone come across this?

Is this a common problem, any fixes I can try before I head to the dealer?

Pretty crappy for a less than 2 year old car with no accidents

Thanks

Just make sure your sunroof is completely closed. Aside from that, it's not a common problem.

Also double check that the rear windows were all the way up. A couple of times I've hit the button which lowers the windows slightly but they look like they are still closed. Then when I'm driving I hear more wind noise and end up pulling up on all the switches and I find the window that was barely open.

Also, make sure you haven't angered any magicians lately...someone may have conjured a minor water elemental to harass you.

[Edit for clarity] > Is there an SB for the Drain Grommet on your build? If so, sounds like that could be the problem as that's the symptom for it, especially if you live in a humid fungus growing climate.

See this thread..

If you have a sunroof it could be clogged sunroof drains. If not, then you probably have a door or two with bad vapor barriers. Both are very common problems with BMW's. Google it.

I had this problem when I would wash my car. Rear foot well carpet behind driver seat would get very damp. Dealer found a tear in the plastic sheet (vapor barrier?) inside the door and did warranty replace. Problem solved.

If it's on the floor only, the moisture barriers in the doors have failed and water leaks in.

I had 2 issues:

1) AC water pipe was leaking, and got a new ac unit
2) door seal was replaced

not sure which was the cause

Haven't really rained that heavily since, so I'm not 100% sure the problem was resolved

Removed the door panel yesterday and found that the vapor barrier was the reason in my case. I reheated the adhesive stuff with a hairdryer and stuck it back. Hopefully this will be the end of the wet carpet..
