Which offset will provide the easiest fitment for a 18x9 wheel?

Planning on getting a set of wheels that are 18x9 and are available with an offset of 30 or 40. Going to be getting 255/40/18 tires with them (extreme contact sport 02). I have checked out the fitment guide on apex wheels but I’m just worried the 255 will rub depending on offset. My car is a 2018 440i xDrive gran coupe. Also on stock suspension but planning to lower in the future. Any feedback on this 255 square setup would be appreciated. Thanks!

i don't like the poke of 255/40/18 at ET30 up front. 255/40/18 will not rub at ET40 however it may be more tucked than you desire

i'd get the ET40 and determine the spacer size after it is installed and lowered. the spacer size will probably be between 3mm-7.5mm and will be different between the front and rear. you can determine thickness by plumbing a string or tape and measuring the distance from the string/tape to tires upper sidewall/shoulder. that distance will be the spacer thickness if you desire the sidewall flush. spacer thickness less than measurement=slightly tucked, more=slighlty poked, this should be obvious but jus sayin'...

in the link below johnung has 255/40/18 @ ET40 with 3mm front, 5mm rear on his lowered F30. if you like the look go with the same. if you want more aggressive 5mm front, 7.5mm rear. personally i'd wait till you get yours and measure your setup specifically as this would be most accurate.

Thanks for your feedback! So sounds like et 40 is the safer option due to being able to put a small spacer on to get the flush look. I guess with et 30 if it pokes too much there’s nothing you can do to change it?

yes, if the offset is too low, you're stuck with it. with ET40 and use of spacers you can tailor the front and rear flushness exactly how you want it. also, different brands and models of 255/40/18 will have a different shape, section width, tread width and F32 are slightly wider than F30, which is why you'll want do it after wheels are installed and you are lowered

Do you know how much poke would come with the et30? I don’t mind a little like a mm or two

i forgot to mention this kind of important matter...

the only thing that could also affect your decision is a lower offset wheel usually has more concavity than the higher one. if the rim face is the same for both offsets then do ET40.

if you like concavity you may have to do ET30 and accept the poke it may have...

here's a post with a stock height F32 xdrive with 255 on 9 ET30

I’m not sure how to check for that.. but it doesn’t really matter to me if their concavity is different.

Wow thanks for finding that post. Doesn’t look like too much poke for me with his et 30 setup

This UK member had 18x9 ET30 Apex ARC8s with 245/40/18 tyres and they were spot on

No poke; perfect offset etc

245/40s suit the size better than 255/40s IMO - they're just a touch too wide IMO

This is how my touring sits on an 18x8 set of OEM 405Ms with 235/45/18 tyres

I did toy with 245/40s but with the state of my local.roads, opted for a bit more sidewall

Same; my local roads here in the UK are B roads, country lanes and single track lanes - all unloved/never looked after

RFTs, 19s etc wouldn't last 5mins - 18s on non RFTs with more sidewall gives a better ride and takes the rough roads so much better

Plus they're forged, so nice and light

Yep that's right. I have the Continental DWS06 tires so not sure how they compare to the Contact Sports

Do those tires run larger compared to others?

I think my tires would poke a bit more than the Extreme Contact sports because of the snow rated tread and the rim protector where the tire meets the wheel.
But that's really just a guess. I would have gotten the tires you want but didn't wanna worry about the colder temps and high performance tires!

I’m still on the fence if I should get 245/40 or 255/40. I don’t want too much poke but I see so many people on here running 255/40. Have you had any experience running a 245 squared setup ? Does running 255 squared provide a noticeable difference in performance?

I went with the 255 mostly cause it retains the 26 inch rolling diameter BMW puts stock on our cars. So the speedo and all that should be same as OEM.
If that effects your choice at all. https://tiresize.com/comparison/ I use this site for checking the differences in sizes.

That’s why I am struggling with decision. Also the extra wheel gap that will come with the 245s 😔
