You did! Don't worry. I prefer the driving of the RWD car, the fact that it often costs less in the NorthEast is just a bonus.

I love depreciation. I drive a 750iL that originally listed for just shy of $80k. I paid $600 for it. I also have an S500 that originally listed for $98k. That one was $400. Both very nice cars by the way.

Yeah that's some depreciation alright. Must be 2 dinosaurs at this price though. I'm sure the cars were made before I was born.

But yeah depreciation in general is pretty bad, it's almost tempting to pick up like an '11 7er for just north of $40k with like 40k miles, but then the reality of every repair being $1500-$2k and all the extra stuff that can go wrong with a car like that and it tearing you apart just because it can sets in. There's a young guy in my building with the previous generation 7er (probably 2007-2008) that looks nice enough, and I'm sure people think it's a $100k car when in reality it was probably $20k-$25k. |

The 750 is a '91 and the S500 is a '97. Both from back in the day when BMW and MB built REAL cars. And they're both in excellent condition. They both were diagnosed incorrectly as having major issues. Neither did.

Why does this perspective continue to be perpetuated? BMW's, by and large, are not unreliable cars.

Look at motortrend...most 5 year values for the C class, A4, and 3-series are about 45-50% less.
Cars like the GTR, STI, or Evo are near 58-60%.

There are arguments about its effectiveness, but JD Power is often quoted. Here's the 2013 results: http://autos.jdpower.com/ratings/dep...ss-release.htm
Overall, a bit worst than middle of the pack - but not anywhere near Lexus. One could argue that the "old geezer" clientele is less likely to complain in a Lexus |

I do take JD's results with a grain of salt though. I've tossed more of those surveys in the trash than I can count (..presumably because I really don't have issues with my cars). I think the only one that I went out of my way to complete was the Navigation survey they sent me, and that was only because people complain so much that I felt obliged to give my positive feedback. I think the people without issue(s) disregard these surveys and others that are similar. |

"Reliability" is used very loosely in these ratings. There are a lot of subjective questions that can drag the ratings down because folks don't like something even though it works as designed. Do a GIS to see what happened to Ford ' ratings immediately following the introduction of Sync. It worked as designed but folks thought it was too complicated. BMW is often a leader with regard to new tech. The downside is folks can occasionally be put off by it.
Case in point, I would not be surprised if the F30 loses points because of folks bitching about ASS, electric steering and anything else they feel shouldn't have been changed. Base your opinions on your own personal experiences, not those that you can't qualify on your own. |

Some people attach reliability to what Consumer Reports says and they are very Pro F30.
I pay little attention to JD powers because I find fault with drivetrain problems much more than something like iDrive acting up. They dont really properly accont for severity of the problem. So I had new VAG product that needed new water pump, intake manifold, and a few coils under 40k miles. That is far more worrisome than something that JD powers would count that some dope would gripe about.
