Factory tint
Can I get the all round tint with the same % rather than the rear passenger windows being darker than the front windows? And of course the windshield can't get tinted because of law here in Australia.

have a shop do it or somebody go to your house. I had a friend who owns a tint shop come and do all my windows, about 20% all around besides windshield. it looks awesome

Here in the states you are allowed tint on all windows but the windshield. As far as I know, you can't get it done at the "factory", but the dealership will do it for a fee ($400 I think). The dealership does a great job though. I've had my wife's X3 done there as well as my coworker's M3.

It depends on what state you're in. In California NO tint is allowed on front windows whatsoever. I just got ticketed for it. |

Just had mine done. Took my chances, but went with medium (35%) in the front windows. My SUV has factory tint, similar, lighter tint in front windows....just got pulled over today (just a warning, thank god!) and he didn't say a thing about my tint.

Perhaps it is something the dealers want to sell you themselves, so they don't want BMW to offer it as a factory option. Or it is to keep the number of options that are available for US customers to a minimum. Just like you don't have the a la carte options for the most part, but mostly option packs. I have the factory tint on my car. |

I think it's because local laws with respect to tinting are so varied here in the US. Some states don't restrict it, others do. Here in PA, the law is written such that you're allowed x% of tint on the front (door) windows, but it's TOTAL tint, including the tint of the glass itself. So anything you add beyond the standard glass tint technically tips it over the edge.
If there was a factory-applied tint that can't be removed, then there's a chance the car might actually be illegal in another/adjoining states. I'm pretty sure lawyers would get involved if it ever impeded the resale of the car. In fact, along these lines, many manufacturers now build all of their US-market cars with emissions that are certified for the State of California for this very reason. It used to be an option for the local California markets. Now the rest of us are stuck with it too. |

factory glass is generally ~97% clear...so that 3% adds into the total allowed tint. You'll notice this if you have a run in w/ a cop who has a tint scanner (I doubt that's the technical term).
Just know your local laws, and whether they are enforced or not - If you go to a reputable shop they'll steer you in the right direction. My tint guy is very talented, and sometimes obeys the laws. |
