Why the smaller fuel tank?

It's only a small irritation but why have BMW made the tank in the F30 smaller than the E91!
I hate stopping to fill up and this doesn't help, last few tanks I have been getting around 400 miles.

It is all that extra mpg which the car will return. You just don't need big tanks any more.

pops.. 30 mpg seems a bit low I would expect in town to be around the late 30's at least!!

On paper combined mpg comes in at 57 mpg for the 330D.

Say we minus 20% to allow for BMW being overly optimistic with their figures.. so I would be expecting lates 30's up to 45 mpg... so what gives?

I suppose it depends on what we term town driving. So open ended, could be classed as 'heavy urban' driving. If so, 30mpg won't be far off.

I wish dude, over a long run with some motorway miles then 43mpg, anything around town seems to be a drain! I will drive like a granny and see what gives!

The range on a fill up will depend on the calculation of mpg at the time of the fill.

No two cars will therefore show the same range, some will be similar but there will be some extremes as well.

For example, from my current car. I know when I picked up my 535i from the garage, it had a full tank and showed a 280 mile range. I was thinking I would have to fill before getting home. At home 310 miles later, I still had 120 miles on the range. Obviously the car's computer calculation was around 18 mpg at the time the garage filled it up.

Filling the car, I can have a range of over 480 miles.

I'm getting a fairly respectable average of 52.5 mpg. It does go up to around the 57mpg level which I am more than satisfied with at the moment. The range on the tank usually shows 650+ on fill up but I usually don't pay any attention so can't be sure. I usually fill up when I get to 550 miles on the tank and the reserve warning hasn't chimed by then so there must still be more than enough fuel left to go

Seeing as my last car I'd fill up around the 450 miles on the tank I can't fault the frugal nature. Admittedly I do use eco pro when cruising on the motorway flicking the switch to comfort or sport depending on the overtake needed Around town is always in comfort as eco pro seems to go backwards on those occasions.

For my daily commute of 22 miles each way, I average 44mpg, irrespective of driving mode. It's fractionally better in eco (obviously) but not enough to make me worry which mode I'm in.
The commute is 2 town/city sections with 12 miles of dual carriageway in between, at rush hour.

On a long trip back from North Wales at the end of August I got 56mpg in eco - that was a lot of country A/B road with a fair number of junctions and a fair amount of traffic, so I was happy with that figure.

Still beats the 24 mpg I was getting daily in my Merc SLK

I get 400-450 miles / tank, but the readout will typically indicate a range of 490 miles at fill-up.

Do you have the "Trip computer" set to reset each journey?, the box ticked in Idrive.
Also do you reset the MPG after filling/each long journey?.
I did a 45 mile each way trip yesterday, Duel and A roads town traffic and some stop start traffic, car returned 43.5MPG overall, now covered 745 miles.
Sport mode "Chassis only" till town then ECO through towns.
