340i ASD?
Does anyone know if the 340 has active sound? I saw some speculation BMW may be getting rid of it and I'm curious if that happened since I'd like to upgrade the amp and this would make it simpler. Thanks.

I think there is. In sport mode whenever I step on the gas and RPM higher than 2000 the sound kicks in. Even though you know its fake I think it adds to the overall experience.
My 2013 328i x was quiet with windows up, with windows down you hear the sewing machine. Definitely not pleased to hear. As far as I know the 13 328 didn't have ASD.

Yes, it's present, and it's definitely louder in Sport/Sport+, or maybe it's just deactivated entirely in Comfort mode? Not sure.
But I agree that it's complementary, and does not feel at all synthetic or unnatural.

I have a 2016 340i and it does have ASD. I coded it to M3 and could tell the difference, but switched back to 340i, which I quite like.

But have you coded ASD on the 340i off? Since the module is present it makes sense that you can code to M3/M4 ASD but have you tinkered with 340i ASD on/off? Would like to know, when off completely, if you can hear the difference.

No, I have not tried to completely turned it off. I selected the M3/M4 engine to code M3/M4 ASD and then coded back to "unknown" and werte "12" which was the original setting for the 340i.

When did you get your 340i? Mine, which I picked up last week was set to B58B30 for engine type and werte 12. You can effectively turn off ASD by selecting a model range and engine type that is invalid. I haven't tried this personally but at least on my 340i, there is no difference from the B58B30 engine type with F30 model type versus the S55xxxx engine type and F80 model type. Makes me think that ASD is disabled elsewhere that we don't know about.

I have not tried selecting an engine type and model range that do not match, but to me the difference was noticeable between "F030/unknown(werte 12)" and "F080/S55B30". Had the M3 setting for a few days and reverted back to the 340i setting. |

Jb4 can mute the active sound on an M3. Hopefully they can do the same for the 340i. Would be cool to be able to switch from 340i/M3/M5 at the touch of a button.
I actually like the sound of ASD on the M3, too quite when turned off. I wouldn't mind having the M3 sound track in my 340i. Every person I told that the M3 had active sound was surprised because they would have never known.

OK - I spent 20-30 minutes playing around with this today and I take back my statement that there is no ASD active. I had actually left my car coded to the M3 body/engine type and hadn't realized it. I coded it back today to the F030 and B58xxxx engine and I agree with the person above who said the 340i ASD sounds better than the M3 sound coded. In fact, I think selecting M3 disables it altogether. Things I noticed:
- No difference whatsoever when coded to M3 between comfort/sport - Could hear my MPE much more when coded to M3 (more reason to think it's disabled in this mode if it doesn't match the true body type of car) - When coded to default 340i settings there is a marked difference between comfort/sport - 340i default settings sound quite nice and not distracting or obviously fake sounding I kept my car at the 340i settings. Was going to code to a body/engine type that doesn't exist to effectively disable it and confirm the M3 settings don't work but I'm home sick today and feel like shit... Maybe I'll try this weekend... Long story short - it has it ASD but it sounds good and if you code it to other types I believe it disables it altogether... |

Huh, I thought I read somewhere that BMW said that the difference in their ASD is that they have a mic by the engine that pipes the sound in, rather than using a pre-recorded sound.
