Munich.
Following its most successful sales year ever, the BMW Group achieved a record numbers of customer deliveries in the first month of the new year. A total of 152,879 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles were handed over to customers around the world in January 2016, an increase of 7.5% on the same period last year.

“We are pleased to see the sustainable levels of growth we achieved in 2015 continuing into this year,” said Dr Ian Robertson, member of the board of management of BMW AG responsible for global sales and marketing BMW. “Despite many markets showing continuing volatility, we remain optimistic that this positive trend will continue through 2016, our company’s centenary year,” he added.

BMW sales increased by 7.5%, with a total of 133,883 units delivered around the world in January. A variety of models throughout the range achieved significant sales growth. The BMW 1 Series increased sales by 22.9% (12,324) while the new BMW X1 grew sales of that model by 60.4% compared with the same month last year (14,308). Combined sales of the BMW 2 Series Active and Gran Tourers in January reached 8,249 units. The BMW X family remains increasingly popular in all vehicle classes: sales of the BMW X3 increased by 16.6% (10,777) while sales of the BMW X6 increased 24.2% (3,587). The brand’s flagship, the new BMW 7 Series, achieved a 26.3% increase on sales compared with the same month last year - a total of 3,392 were delivered to customers around the world. Globally, 1,255 BMW i vehicles were delivered to customers.

Following record sales in 2015, MINI achieved its best-ever January with a total of 18,867 vehicles delivered to customers worldwide (+8.6%). The MINI 5 door was one of the brand’s main growth drivers, with sales of that model increasing 49.2% (5,783). The new MINI Clubman’s strong start continued into January with a total of 2,300 units delivered worldwide.

The positive sales trend in Europe continued into January with deliveries of BMW and MINI vehicles increasing by 10.9% compared with the same month last year (61,737). Several markets achieved double-digit growth including Italy (+16.2% / 5,907), France (+18.8% / 5,273) and Spain (+25.5% / 4,417). The region’s two biggest markets for the BMW Group, Germany and the UK, also grew sales in January: 20,009 new BMW Group vehicles were registered in Germany (+2.4%) while UK sales grew by 2.3% (9,453).

The sales result in the Americas was affected by the storms which disrupted large parts of the USA in January. A total of 26,667 BMW and MINIs were delivered in the region in the first year of the month (-2.9%). Although sales in the USA were 4.0% down on the same month last year, deliveries in Canada rose 9.8% (2,280) and sales in Mexico were up 13.0% (1,430).

Deliveries of BMW and MINI vehicles in Asia increased by 9.8% (59,522) compared with January last year. In Mainland China, deliveries rose 8.4% (43,441), sales in South Korea increased 13.4% (4,587) and deliveries in Japan climbed 19.3% (3,833).

The year also began well for BMW Motorrad, which achieved a sales increase of 19.6% compared with January last year. A total of 7,488 BMW motorcycles and maxi-scooters were delivered to customers around the world in the month, making it the division’s best January ever.

Significantly lower than Merc and Audi this month.
And how Daimler sold so good in NA in January?
These reports are presented in such a strange way

All that matters is that the company is healthy. Daimler is a bigger organization and they have the new generations of many products starting. This is natural product life cycle activity

BMW is in a battle for second this year with Audi, as Mercedes is expected to win the sales crown quite comfortable this year. The new 5 series is coming, but it will not be able to make any inroads as Mercedes very popular E class is also brand new. Worryingly for BMW, sales of Mercedes now 3 year old S class more than double sales of the new 7er. I'm not a shareholder, so it doesn't matter to me, but I think BWMs stale interior design is catching up with them now

The 7 Series always played second fiddle to the S Class. The S Class is pretty much the industry benchmark of its class.

True. For one reason or another, besides the E38 and possibly the E32 (especially when the V12 debuted), the 7 has always had some mistake to put it at a disadvantage. Nowadays, as with many other BMWs, they just don't have the obvious "edge" as the E38 or E32 did. The brand new 7 seems nice, but it doesn't lend itself to "awe" like an S class does. It's not quite as lovable - it doesn't make me want to buy one or even drive it. Mercedes on the other hand, especially with the new E class, can do no wrong right now. Their cars are beautiful on the outside, BEAUTIFULLY made and designed on the inside, and drive really really well. That sells them. BMW lately seems to do the minimal it has to do to stay competitive and has to restore to attractive lease offers. BMW doesn't seem to take initiative to set trends in the mainstream market except with its efficiency apparatus (hybrids, carbon, etc). Lexus has some polarizing design, especially with the new LC500 coming, Audi has some great new designs and cars that are hiding the common Audi faults very well, Porsche is cranking out masterpieces, Mercedes is killing it, and BMW seems to be very pedestrian and mediocre in comparison. Cars like the LC500 and the S class are setting trends, while the offerings from BMW are trying to keep up.

I'm not a BMW hater, but I try to be real. I've been very disappointed with them. They're not cool anymore.

As a BMW fanatic, up to 3 years ago, I couldn't see myself driving "boring, old man Mercedes" now, my daily driver is a C450 AMG Sport, I loved my E90 335i, but the interior of the F30 was what had me looking elsewhere, I sat in the C450, then drove it, the rest is history. Therein lies BMW problems, their dated interior design is driving even some of their loyal fans to other brands

Agree with autopal. BMW driver for 9 years now. Wife's lease is coming to an end and I don't think will be staying with the BMW brand. Was looking for a full size suv and the competition just seems better. The "boring" Mercedes or even the "more boring" Volvo are calling my name

That chart is "sales growth" not total sales.

While I wouldn't say my interior feels "dated"... but it does have a striking resemblance to the E38! As a child I remember looking into the interior of the E38 admiringly, and I can't help but feel like the overall look is the same in my F30!

I was a late adopter due to the poor image in the UK but both my 335d (had for 5.5 years) and my current M135i (2 years from new) have been utterly brilliant. I try very hard to avoid brand loyalty but BMW gets close.
Not all great but mostly very good plus the M135i is the last hatch with a proper engine and correct wheel drive.
