oil filler for N47

Hi Bimmers,

Just get a silly question, I put a new oil filter on my X3 D20, but have no idea this copper ring? is it for oil drain? or should I put it on the oil filler? thanks mates

It's meant for the drain plug on the oil pan.

I found this oil filter installation is very tricky,
1, I try to install this oil filter as pic 1 below, "align the filter and push in" then result in oil leaking!!! I found many many oil mark on my floor in two days, 100% sure I tighten the oil filter and replace the rubber ring correctly.

2, then I pull it out, and this time I attach it to the cap first (pic 2), and " align the filter and push in", only found few drops in these two days ( not sure why still have oil drops!!!)

I just wonder which methods is correct? and why I still get oil drops thanks mates

When you remove the oil cap the oil filter normally stays on the cage that is part of the cap - so upon changing out the filter I install the filter on the cap/cage assembly prior to putting cap back on - basically just the way it came out of the housing

I
  • Remove the cap
  • Remove the oil filter from cage
  • Remove the cap o-ring
  • Remove the cage stem green o-ring (you apparently don't have this)
  • Drop the cap/cage assembly into parts washer to clean off old oil (not entirely necessary)
  • Pre-oil & install the new cap o-ring
  • Pre-oil & install the green stem o-ring (again you don't have this)
  • Install the new oil filter on cage
  • Install the cap/cage/oil filter assembly back into oil housing & tighten cap to correct torque spec

Me too! And make sure that big O-ring is in the correct groove on the cap.

Thanks 1QuikWS6 mate, I think you are right and I did the same way likes you in the second time, but still found few drops (2-3 overnight) in these two days (228 and 29 Oct), dont know why but hope they are from my last stupid installation.

Thanks John, yes I did check that rubber o ring is in the correct groove because I was thought that is the problem but not, now looks like I follow the pic from the internet that push the filter into housing first before attaching it to the cap!!!
