Brake dust be damned!

Like many others here I am astounded by the amount of brake dust our cars give off. Just driving the car around the block will result in a light layer of dust. Last week I put some 22PLE VM1 wheel coating on my wheels. After driving around for 300 miles, the amount of dust on my wheels is noticeably less. Already a big win! This weekend I washed my car and was amazed at how easily the brake dust came off with just a spray from my garden hose. Not all the dust came off but enough came off for me to consider not cleaning the wheels. Anyway, I am not affiliated with 22PLE at all. In fact, I dont use their products normally (I prefer gtechniq products).

Have you used the Armor All Wheel Protectant? That stuff will put 22PLE to shame. Your wheels will be absolutely dust free. Unfortunately, its tricky to apply and is not durable.

IMO the best solution is low dust pads, if you dont track that is.

Do low dust pads come stock? My 335 has the OEM pads, and I've actually been impressed with the low brake dust output, compared to that of my E46.

After not washing my rims for over a month the silver wheels now look like graphite.

328d and almost no brake dust at all. It's really amazing. My mini cooper would be black in a week. They've obviously gone to some sort of ceramic pad in the 328d.

Could also switch brake pads to a ceramic compound, might not give you the initial bite, but dust will be significantly less. Most go with akebono euro ceramic pads, I went with carbotech 1521's.

When the mini came time to do, I went with Akeebono euro ceramic on it. Good pads and reasonably priced from tire rack. They are OEM for many euro cars.

To me it seems BMW has switched to a less dirtier pad then years past. My old 02 330 would literally have black wheels after 2 weeks of driving.

I use Wheel Wax on my rims as a protectant. Its a bit of work to put it on, but it significantly helps with reducing dust buildup and helps with clean off. In between car washes, I usually just cleanup the rims with a rag and some spray cleaner like Windex.

Sonax Wheel Cleaner is also a great product for cleaning when washing the car.

I don't understand the whole brake dust thing...do they dust more that the average car?? yes, but it still wipes right off like any other brake dust. I usually wash my car once a week or at the very least once every 2 weeks, I have never had any issues cleaning the rims...I drive the car a lot and even if it takes me 2 weeks to wash the car both the car and the rims get almost just as dirty

Its more of a pain in the rear to clean, at least for me who is fairly OCD. I clean both the lug nut holes, barrels, and back side of the wheel so anything that I can do to make the job easier/quicker is appreciated. And yes, BMW does seem to dust up more.

I feel your pain, maybe I find it a bit easier to clean because I have the base 320 so there's no slots in between the spokes in the rims, the pads BMW and some other brands use are softer and cause more dust no doubt about it, I guess it's the less of the two evils right? Better braking but more dust.

I have the M-Sport brakes and have a lot of dust. I use a Shark steam cleaner to melt away the dust and then wipe off with paper towel. Maybe I'm crazy but I enjoy cleaning the wheels in the garage every week. It's kind of like meditation.

I never thought of using my steam cleaner! May have to try that though with the 22PLE coating the brake dust comes off pretty easy with just a hose and a wipe.

I typically clean my wheels every two weeks and wash my car every month.

I tried the Armor All stuff on my off cars stock tires and didn't like it very much. Yes is kept them cleaner longer, but found that when they did get dirty it was harder to clean them off.

I'm going to put some Opti Coat on before I put my summers back on to see how much it helps. I'm also contemplating getting them painted be entirely diamond black, but we'll see how it goes.
