Just wondering here.. how many of you are actually going to use, or using, the text and email functionality?

I don't have the email functionality on my Android but with the text, I have found it works much faster and easier to just grab my phone, click on the text and read it instead of doing it through office. I thought the whole office turned out quite disappointing and more time consuming to use than just using my phone. As for safety issues, I don't think it's all that safe to do it through the idrive either lol.

lol it does read them but you're not going to like it.. it's like a computerized voice, as if you're listening to Stephen Hawking's wife lol and it will name everything like exclamation mark, colon, double colon, parenthesis, etc etc.

The data exchange between the Phone and iDrive uses Bluetooth (MAP). You can use the USB connection for charging and other purposes but contacts, mail and texts is via Bluetooth

Are you paired to a bluetooth supported phone?
Yes, paired to iPhone 4s

True, but there's gotta be a short voice command, right?

I have a long commute I could see listening to emails as a helpful last resort. :-)

This solution has nothing to do with BMW apps.

Don't I get BMW connected with BMW apps? Don't I need this at least? My Idrive without apps doesn't show connected or office as an option.

Prereqs should be:
  • Idrive
  • Combox
  • Bluetooth
  • iPhone with iOS6 installed

I just ordered a 2013 F30 with Tech and Enhanced USB.

What is "combox" and do I need it?

Combox should be standard equipment on all iDrive units starting 9/2010.

Ok, I have all of those on my 2012 328i. So in ios6 does Siri just take over the little voice button?

I thought I needed apps to get the "office" app so that my email and text messages would work.

This is my combox model I have is post 27 in this thread.

Sorry, this is my first bimmer... Newbi here. I just want to make sure I can take advantage of ios6

iOS 6 supports the data exchange of Bluetooth MAP for Email and Text messages via iDrive. It's leveraging current the current bt (Message Access Profile) standards and practices that are supported in a handful of smartphones. The Siri "Eyes Free" function has not been officially announced or deployed yet.

This is great news!!!
I mean I bought the car knowing iPhone integration didn't work for SMS and email but to be truthful - who is buying this car to read emails and texts right?

I thought it was odd the car comes with a snap in for iPhone - a device it doesnt fully integrate with.

Nonetheless - what great news, good to see the technology has caught up. I take delivery of my 335 in the next couple of week, its about to pull into port this monday, so then I guess once iOS6 is released Im away, unless I cant take it and have to go for the beta.

Cheers for the update guys.

I think I follow, and again, remember I'm new to all of this.

I just want to clarify that i don't need to go and retrofit apps for this to work?

I do have a developer account but need my phone as my life blood so don't want to risk trying it out until its a bit more stable.

Yep...no retrofit.

Beta 2 is very stable and snappy. I use it everyday on my primary iPhone. If it doesn't workout for you can downgrade back to 5.1.
