I can never tell anything from these sorts of shots...

One thing I am curious about--the original post says that the coupe will debut in late 2013--shouldn't that be late 2012 since they just unvieled the F30 sedan?

I tend to agree. As a current 3 series coupe owner, renaming the new car to a 4 in my opinion confuses things particularly when it comes to resale.

Was also nice saying "I own a 335i coupe" and not saying the year. People just assume your car is brand new then. Now they will know it's not brand new

Look at the two pictures below. There is almost no difference in overhang length, and any different comes from the deceptive camo pattern and BMW's added body pieces that accompany the pattern. Stop whining, for christ's sake. It's just a fucking car. YOU'RE NOT BUYING THE CAMOUFLAGED CAR. And if you hate it when it's unveiled, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY IT.
Looks can be deceiving, using Photoshop, superimposing the two cars, they appear to be very similar in overall size [height and length] with two exceptions, the F32 appears to have a longer wheelbase and the rear "C" column/rear window slants a few inches beyond the current model. You have to discount the excessive camo covering front and rear facia.

Wow I forgot how awful the e92 looked back then. Unlike BMWs of today, they actually looked better when they were revealed instead of worse.

The verts heavy rear end kills the fun. Drop top motoring is good when you want to just cruise, but when you want to carve up some back-roads, the balance of the sedan and coupe is almost second to none. That's one thing BMW does very nicely. Even weight distribution. I hope they keep it going with the F generation 3 series.

This theory would work great if a rear weight bias didn't work better than a 50/50 weight bias. BMW traditionally can't get much better than 50/50 because of the front engine and front transaxle plus the desire for four seats, but there's a chance that the F80/F82 could push things towards a 45/55 weight bias which would help acceleration, braking and with proper suspension tuning, handling too.

There's a good reason F1 cars, LeMans racers and nearly every exotic are around 35/65 weight bias and even front engine cars like the 599 GTO have a pretty heavy rearward weight bias.

I will concede that the lack of torsional stiffness and added weight of most convertibles does make them less fun at the limit than coupes, but it's certainly not because they have more weight over the back.

So, you'd rather get the sedan instead of the coupe just because the coupe will be called a "4" series?

I thought the guy who won't get the new 3 because of the headlight to grill connection was putting too much weight on such a minor thing, but you may have topped him.

As Shakespeare wrote,
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

So it is with BMW's 3 series coupe, now being called a 4 series.
It's still on of the finest coupes on the road that mere mortals can afford.

Totally agree with what you say. Funny how so many people pass judgment already with a car in testing, and of course totally didn't read the op's comments.

Will have a final say when the car is released. Can't wait for that day.

A big benefit to the new size is that it will weigh LESS than the current coupe.
That's a big positive considering it's longer wheelbase, which will give it a great ride, and a bit wider at the wheels, which will give it more handling stability.

I agree that this concept that every new chassis must be bigger is silly.
If people bought the car at the size it currently is, then what is the justification for increasing the overall dimensions?
When I had my E46 I never thought or said to myself, "Man this car would be great if only it were bigger."
That NEVER crossed my mind.
As well, with my 135i my only wish is for a better sport suspension and better rain gutters.
I've never once thought the 1 would be better if it were bigger inside and out.

A better method would have been to increase wheelbase and keep the same overall length, thus keeping the short overhang look of previous 3 sedans and coupes. Then, increase the wheels width a bit, and you have better ride and handling with the same overall exterior size.
That would have reduced weight a bit more and give the new car better overall agility and appearance.

Gaining an inch or so in rear leg room isn't going to increase sales in this class and size of car. If someone really needs more interior room and they want a BMW, then there is the 5 series, which could have stayed the same size as before as well.

This bigger mentality is a major reason why many of us moved into the 1 series as it is a smaller BMW that many of us appreciate.
It's sports suspension is the greatest, but that hopefully will be addressed and fixed with the new 2 coupe.

For me, the 2 won't be here in time for my next purchase so I may go with the new 3 sedan and 3 years from now I may look at the next 2.
I have some weighting to do.
