my previous car was a 128i with winter tires, and I have to say driving on the same roads, pulling out of the same snowy parking spots this year with my xdrive with winter tires is night and day. No more back and forth, i just point the wheel out of the spot and it pulls right out. I never had full confidence in my old car even with dedicated winter tires as I would still got stuck and have to shovel my way out of parking spots. So far, I am very happy with the performance of the xdrive and snow tires this season.

Good call. I love reading about the guys on RWD with winters saying their car is amazing in the snow and they never get stuck. They havent tried awd with winters.

Whether it's me or anyone else on the thread who has said RWD with winters is all you need - I don't know that anyone is claiming they are the same. If someone is saying that, I disagree. They are not the same. AWD with snow tires will be better in the snow. In the snow…..

But, if you are a normal driver who doesn't live out in the countryside and drives primarily on city roads and highways, is it worth the $3000, added weight, higher fuel consumption, higher ride height/center of gravity, softer chassis, and reduced feel/fun factor for the few days a year that RWD may be difficult but still very doable?

Been enjoying my RWD with snow tires...in snow.

Everyone here in NJ has all seasons with AWD...FAIL.

Nobody was claiming they were the same. I agree with you. I'm in Canada...look at my sig. No x drive. Pretty brutal when we get lots of snow but that doesnt really happen a lot. Tried an x drive and it was brutal compared to the lower & firmer sport suspension e92. The one I tried had "M" package. I still remember looking at the salesman and saying something about oxymoron.

Well, yesterday on the way home form work I got impatient on the main roads and ventured tot he side streets, which were not only unploughed but had brutal piles in all the intersections, and the f30 was undeterred!

I'm not talking "I made it through" - I'm saying there was literally no question about it.I could not believe it, even the few times I had to stop at light in the deep stuff, getting going again was like it wasn't even there,

I can't help but wonder why Canadians spend the extra $3000 on xdrive.it's got to be for the peace of mind, because if you know what you're doing out there, that money would be far better spent on additional options, or just saved altogether.

The capability of this thing in the snow has now moved up probably into the top 3 things I like most about the car.
Yeah my LM60s have Carried me through the winter in the east coast so far....

We're gonna get tested again this weekend. Apparently Texas is sending us like 3 different systems. Starting tomorrow with rain, then ice and snow through the weekend.

I am consolidating two cars (545i RWD and 525xi) to one and am still a bit apprehensive committing 100% to RWD. I know from experience on the 545i, that I can live day to day with RWD, but when I knew it was going to get bad like this current storm, I'd take the AWD. If only insurance companies had a fairer rate for a single driver who owns two cars. it's just not worth paying full price to insure two cars anymore.

Coming from multiple awd cars (Audi, Subaru) I got into Bmw exactly for the rwd driving experience. I live in the snow belt and haven't had any major issues with rwd. My only gripe is the lack of a real LSD. It would make a big difference accelerating from a dead stop which is really the only issue the car has in inclement weather.

Also better in virtually all inclement weather conditions.

Also better in acceleration in dry weather conditions, including rolling starts. Brakes just as well too

With RWD in snow you gotta have the traction control completely off. Thats a must if you want to get anywhere.
