Steering Column Buzz Over Rough Pavement
I've got a buzzing noise coming from the plastic around the steering column when driving over rough pavement. All I need to do is to put my finger on either the upper or lower part of the column and the noise stops. I was thinking of padding the mating surfaces of the upper or lower part of the column.
Does anyone know how to remove the plastic cover on the column that sits on top of the signal and wiper stalks? |

I had the same issue. I turned it over to the dealer to fix (their responsibility) and they fixed it on the first try. I think they removed the panels and packed the area with insulation.

I had the issue, too. Mine only happened at above 60 mph and, from where my dealer is located, during the day it's nearly impossible to get up to that speed on Portland highways. I had to poke my dealer a couple of times before they dealt with it, but they did.

Do they fixed the problem? Mine had the same buzz noise and drove me crazy.

They did, eventually. I never brought the car in for just the buzz. I brought it up when I brought it in for the vacuum pump recall, then when I bought my 397 wheels, and the third time was when I discovered, 8 months into owning it, that my driver's-side rear folding seat did not, in fact, fold. I was respectfully blunt about not caring if they could reproduce it and the service manager took a look at it himself and decided that plastic was moving too much when he poked it.
They took it apart, foam-taped it or whatever, and put it back together. It doesn't rattle/buzz now, and it doesn't flex when you poke it. It's possible that they didn't get paid from BMW for fixing it under warranty as they never verified the problem actually existed, but in the end they helped keep a customer happy. I have a similar issue most notably on grooved pavement while they prep for a new layer of asphalt. For me I found it to be the vinyl that attaches to the steering column under the cluster. If I apply light pressure to the vinyl or move it a bit, it goes away for a bit and then returns. I figure when I'm in for the next service in a couple thousand miles I'll let them know and they can sort it out, but should be an easy fix.
Good luck with yours.

I had the same issue. Told them that it has to be the steering column covers, they first applied more insulation but that didn't help. Asked them to replace the covers, which they finally did. No more buzzing!
