Oil changes
So I just got my 428xi (Canada), dealer says the car will tell me when to go for oil changes. I'm finding articles that say the notification is at 15000KM. But I've also read that people recommend changing it every 8000-10000KM?
Should I stick with when the car tells me? edit: I think I may just go every 10000km Last edited by Raptor7; 05-26-2016 at 10:03 AM.. |

7500KM, pay out of your own pocket oil change. and the next 7500KM is the free one provided by dealer. That was my schedule, but now since I'm near 80,000KM and my 4 year free maintenance is up, I'm doing it every 7500KM myself. |

I've just always let the computer tell me...never had an issue...but I don't keep my cars for more than 5-6 years so no time to have any major issues

My car has 1600 miles, I'm going to do an oil change at my expense at 2,000 miles. I want the break-in oil out of there, even if it is a waste. After that I will let the service light rule.

Pretty sure the service notification comes on either 1yr or whatever miles you're at on low mile driven cars. My car triggered it saying oil change due at 6600miles..which was pretty much 1yr after I bought the car.

Now that the service plan is over, I typically do an oil change every 5000 miles if the car has seen a track event during that interval or 7500 miles if the car has not seen a track event. |

Better safe than sorry, I'd agree. My car isn't driven that much so the current intervals,(about 1x/yr at 6000miles) is fine. The miles are highway so at least the engine oil reaches operating temperature etc...even if they're low (miles).

Once again, I'm amused that people try to weigh between the official recommendation by the company that designed, built, and warrants the engine, and the masses on the Internet
Yes, there's a lot of smart people here, and yes, there may be legitimate reasons for choosing to change oil more frequently. But given how cheap it is for BMW to change the oil and how important oil changes are to an engine...does it really make sense that they'd artificially prolong the standard maintenance intervals at the potential expense of undermining engine longevity? My advice: Stick to the engine computer's recommendation and find other things to worry about.

You think any rent-a-car company would ever change oil sooner rather than recommended? You think rent-a-cars are blowing engines? Do you think if you change oil more often your car will last longer? Plenty of seized f30 engines and few to do with the interval. Additionally keep in mind the interval is tied to distance and how hard you drive the car. If you drive 700 really hard that oil interval will drop by almost double. I did a track day and the car said 4K to oil change. End of the day it said 2k. Dirty oil isn't great for engines but it's the heat they generate that kill them |
