The Shop Foreman is involved in "tweaking" the window adjustments after replacing the window guides. He was not satisfied with the result after replacing the window guides. Sounds like a tedious process, and one requiring a lot of patience from the customer (i.e. me).
I am hoping to be able to test it this afternoon and will provide as much detail on the fix as is made available.

Well, wind noise is a big issue when you spend 50-60k on a car... This might sound weird to some, but you need to forget about making an important call while on freeway. The road noise is not that bad if you consider this is a sports car with RF tires. But the wind noise is ridiculous... Whoever did this job at BMW, needs to start working for a truck company!

I have my 330D for a month now and the wind noise above 60kph is clearly audible. Dealership still blames the mirror design and state there is nothnig wrong with vehicle. I am so dissapointed after E46 and E90 experience.

that's exactly what my dealer told me 3 times. All F30s that Ive driven (4 by now) have this issue. Those who say their cars are fine probably have hearing issues (with all due respect).

Angry Wind Noise

[QUOTE=shahramghs;14241628]that's exactly what my dealer told me 3 times. All F30s that Ive driven (4 by now) have this issue. Those who say their cars are fine probably have hearing issues (with all due respect).[

Had the dealership measure the sound level at 100 kph and the reading is 81dB. Anytihng above 85 and we should be wearing earplugs. If BMw cant fix it then we should be given earplugs as standard kit. ]

Was the measurement in dB(A) or dB SPL?
Anyway, 81 dB on any dB scale is far too loud.
Mine reads 68 dB(A) at 70 mph on good tarmac.

4 cars is alarming, but is still a poor sample size to make a definitive statement.

I would try to be scientific, ala F30AM whose decibel readings really are the most scientific and productive way to attack this.

Well, perhaps you are right, but I would pay for anyones lunch and beer who comes down to Socal and LA with an F30 msport that doesnt have this issue (compared to my car).

BTW, I have tried the DB rating, the wind noise is not that loud to be measure the noise by sound measurements. I did compare my numbers to a VW CC that is a pretty quite car, and the numbers were very close. I did this months ago, so don't remember the numbers, but it was in mid 70s. Please also note that when you do compare cars in this manner, you need to be exactly on the same road strip, and the weather/wind conditions all needs to be taken into account. So, scientifically speaking, I have done the work. Remember that I started this thread

There are two possibilities, either the noise is subjective and some folks dont notice it (like the first shop foreman I talked to), or there is a variable in the cars that we are missing.

You know something though, skimming back on this thread, I saw one pic of a mirror from an F30 that looked different than mine. It had a square ending vs mine that is round and more narrow. I'm not sure if its possible that different regions are getting getting slightly different designs and that's what's causing the the difference?

I think those from NA are mostly seeing this issue...?

After having read article after article on test drives of the F30 that say there is a noticeable amount of wind noise present in the car at highway speed I am now leaning towards purchasing a 5 series instead of the 3 series.

I was looking to buy a 335i x-Drive but will now likely pay the extra cash for the 5 series. I am not interested in driving a noisy car that costs over
$50k. May as well spend $60k and get one that is at least quiet.

What a pain! Wind noise should NOT be an issue in a $50 thousand dollar automobile.

Same here. I'll upgrade to 535d as soon as December. F30 it's the most fun car I ever had, but also the noisiest.

Not trying to post wh0re here as I am genuinely interested in solving the wind noise problems as well being genuinely bewildered on how BMW could let such cars out of the factory. I've already written these thoughts in the road noise thread, but feel that I should make the point in this thread as well.

I originally thought that my car had wind noise issues. At 80km/h and above (50mph) I used to hear lots of cross wind buffeting in my car. At speeds as little as 35km/h (20mph) I thought I heard excessive noise from the wing mirrors.

I genuinely believed these were wind noise related issues. In fact, they're not. I think the only genuine wind noise related issues are to do with the windscreen strip and poor fitting / fast perishing seals.

As I eliminated the various sources of noise, I came to realise that the majority of what I thought was wind noise is from the cheap thin plastic sh1t BMW use for the front section of the front wheel arches, with zero sound proofing. To prove it, Frogman & I both shrouded this cheap cr@p with sound deadening material and both found less noise.

Today I just had the doors adjusted so that they shut really tight... that eliminated the rest of the noise to the point where I can honestly say my car is as quiet as a tomb at freeway speeds on smooth tarmac.

So before you go writing off your car, I encourage you to have your doors adjusted. If there is even a slight smidgen of "give" when you press the door against the chassis, then it's worth taking the doors in for adjustment. The difference is remarkable.

You should be able to push on your doors hard and have zero movement.

If the door adjustments alone don't make you happy, you will unfortunately have to resort to manual labour & do some extra sound proofing... but I tell you... you will love your car again !!

Please don't give up fellas. I think it's worth investing in a bit of time to bring back enjoyment of ownership of a great car. Pity BMW skimped on the wheel arches.

The voice of reason

There do seem to be two different types of wheel arch covers. Mine are still plastic, but from your description elsewhere not nearly as thin as yours appear to be, and I've not noticed any real improvement by temporarily lining them. Maybe BMW are using different wheel arch covers in different markets for some obscure reason.

The main improvement I've found in reducing road noise was by investing in a BMW boot (trunk) liner. Having the extra layer of thick rubber/plastic in the boot has made a noticeable difference to the amount of noise entering the cabin, albeit at the expense of slightly reducing the lovely 335i exhaust note as well.

Thanks for the reminder. I might try that as well to see if it makes a difference.

It might be normal. If you're driving a Honda.

No offense to Honda's owners.

I got that too.

It's like: Gee, the wheels fell off at 60 mph; Service: Oh, that's normal!

Hondas are pretty quiet. The Accord, for example, typically measures in the low 60 - 61 dB range at 70 MPH cruise.

Disclaimer: I'm not talking about the newest model.

Accord is among the noisiest sedans in its class, and it's always been like that. It's not me saying it - never drove one - it's the auto journalists. Honda has a history of poor sound proofing and the Accord is no different. Just drive a Fit or a Civic

But we digress

Went to drop off my car today for some service and also revisited the wind noise issue. I had them make note of the gaping on the window guide up top on all windows. Went for a test drive with the shop foreman and was told that it's the aero dynamic of the car from the side mirrors and is not repairable. After the drive we looked at 2 other f30 and lo and behold the window guide were tighter then a virgin vag**a and obviously no gaping. Shop foreman still insisted that it is not a defect and they would not fix it since it will take a lot of work just to refit or replace the rubber guide
