HUD Vibration

After reading a few different threads about people experiencing noises/rattles coming from their HUD [area] - nothing seemed to quite match what I'm experiencing.

Has anybody experienced a random "vibration" noise coming from the HUD area?

I've tried pushing down on all the trim around the HUD to see if it would help; it doesn't. The sound is driving me crazy when it happening.

Of course it doesn't always happen. It's random. There doesn't seem to be any particular condition/pattern that causes it to happen. When it's cold out, I turn on the heater to see if it will help by slightly expanding the plastics; it doesn't.

I have read posts where people have had to remove the HUD trim and they found that the foam around the display is the culprit. Theirs was making the noise when they would just push down on the trim; which mine isn't.

I hesitate at scheduling an appt to have it looked at because as luck would have it, it probably wouldn't happen when they look at it.

I will try to get a video but I honestly don't know if the mic on my phone will accurately pick up the vibration sound. The noise is very real though. A recent passenger made a comment about it.

Potential ideas on fixes would be really appreciated.

I had a mystery buzz noise coming out from center dash board and the car has been back in the shop for a few repair and they couldn't isolated the problem. It's only buzz when I hit rough surface road and driving me crazy, not so sure if it's came from the HUD.

Zamboni - thanks for the reply. I have a feeling that it might be the same situation with me if I bring it in to be looked at; although, it is driving me crazy and I think I might just have to give it a whirl and see what they can possibly find.

For my buzz, it can even happen on relatively smooth roads. It's definitely either the HUD or near it. I may look up how the HUD is assembled. I'm not sure if it's basically just one unit that is installed as one piece or if it's a few elements.

DLNDGUY,

Dropped it off tonight at Stevens Creek and my SA & supervisor will test drive the car tomorrow and pin point where the buzz noise is coming from.
For the root cause it's difficult to say front or rear of the car but I will wait for their finding and get the problem resolve once for all. Will keep you posted.

I fixed these issues on my car long ago, you need to watch these videos I made.

I watched your videos and totally appreciated seeing your fix.

When I press on the trim, it doesn't make the squeak that yours did . . . did you experience a vibration sound when you were driving. If you did, I might try it out and see if it helps. If you did, maybe I have an issue with the foam "ring" - just to a lesser degree.

Thanks for your input.

Stevens Creek is my closest dealership, too. Small world!

Let me know how it goes! My fingers are crossed that they'll be able to isolate the issue and can get it resolved.

There was a slight vibrating issue as I recall, the clips were cracking and until I separated them with the pliers that made it go away. That foam they put in there is really terrible and is 90% of the issue. I wanted to replace it but then the plastic bezel would be loose so I packed a ton of that foam I had in there until it was so tight I could barely put it all back together.

It was predominantly noticeable in extreme colds, but after the foam and my rework I never had an issue again.

I noticed the image vibrating on my way to work tonight. It is just a slight vibration, but was noticeable. There was no sound associated with this vibration.

One more small issue to inform my dealer about.

Cheers,

Ken

Just dropped my car off today (rear differential needed to be replaced). I asked that they look into the HUD noise . . . not holding my breath that they'll be able to do anything about it.

I removed the cover a few weeks ago; but was hesitant on trying to fix it myself. When I get it back later this week, I might try taking this on myself, again.

Let me know if you hear anything from Stevens Creek! My fingers are crossed for you.

I had the noise. I just lived with it

Sometimes the dealers mess up the interior trim trying to chase down issues (like when the door card on my wife's car was messed up repairing the side view mirror) so I pick my battles on what to have them go after

Please ask for shop foreman Florell he is well aware of my vehicle, according to the repair he have added more felt tape around the HUD.

I hear ya on "picking battles"; this noise just drives me crazy. It's also embarrassing when others are in the car with me. The noise that is being made makes me feel like I'm driving around in a car interior of an 1990s Saturn [or similar]. Drives me nuts!

So do you have the car back yet? If it worked . . . I will certainly inquire.

Stevens Creek couldn't get me in soon enough (to replace the rear differential), so it's currently at the dealership in Fremont. Still waiting to hear what they can possibly do. [[fingers crossed]]

I had the same buzzing noise around the driver area dash. I almost took apart the HUD myself because it just drove me crazy. But my actual problem was the AC vent on the driver side (one nearest to the door), the internal parts were rattling. My suggestion is to remove that vent then drive around to see if the buzzing disappear. You just pull that part out, and it snaps back to place.

Got the car back for almost 10 days and the rattle won't go away when temp is warm and I could still hear the rattle from HUD despite more felt tape installed around HUD area. Funny thing is I won't hear the rattle during cold weather and is on the same rough surface road.
My next move is to pay a visit at Peterpan BMW and see what they could do.

The driver side A/C vent in my 2013 F30 335i xDrive sedan was replaced by the dealer with additional foam insulation after I described the buzzing sound to the dealer.

Now I am investigating buzzing sound coming from steering column (under the dashboard). This sound only occurs when driving over rough roads.

Rats!

The rattle I have happens when it's warm or cold. When it's cold, I turn on the heat to see if there's a change. When it's warm, I turn the AC on. Nothing. Randomly, about 10% of the time, it will be silent. Sadly, with mine it's not even a matter of being on really rough roads or relatively smooth roads. Since there is no definitive "condition" they won't be able to remedy it.

I removed the trim on the dashboard and it doesn't appear to be the clips. I'm guessing it's either related to the foam gasket or something inside of the HUD unit itself.

I too had that under the driver dash rattle. There are so many plastic pieces in there and it could be alot of things. It is very easy to remove the panel under there and take a look. My buzzing sound came from the rear camera control module located under the driver dash, i just put some felt tape on and that fixed the rattling.

So I got my car back from Fremont . . . problem unresolved.

Two days ago, as I was driving, I was [traditionally] irritated by the rattle and randomly decided to just start touching everything around the cluster. To my surprise, when I pushed down on the top of the plastic cover of the steering wheel column, THE NOISE STOPPED!!!! It wasn't even the HUD making the noise. It honestly sounded like it was coming from up there. Now that I have isolated and confirmed that it's the plastic cover making this uber irritating noise, I'm going to see if the dealership can help resolve it.

Since isolated, I've looked up fixes. I saw some that used foam around the column; I'd like to keep this as a "last resort" fix. I'd like to see if there is a more less-conspicuous solution.

At any rate . . . the next time the rattle/vibration noise starts, try pushing down or touching the plastic cover of the steering wheel column! See if it works for you. I am thrilled that I was finally able to isolate this issue.

Mine went back to the shop and clearly the HUD is the main cause of the vibration, I applied pressure on the HUD and the rattle stopped.

I suspected the HUD is not sitting proper and they need to figured it out how to fix this problem. Dropped the car off last Tuesday and still in the shop. Stay tuned.
