Damn Potholes!!!!

So was driving home from work and hit a huge ass pothole on the highway. The front driver side tire is popped. Worst part is I saw the pothole but couldn't do anything b/c there was a truck right next to me. Thank God was only 2 miles away from my house and was able to get home on the run-flats. Didn't see any cracks in on the Rim but I'm sure its probably bent judging from the damage to the tire. My question is, would there be other damages to like mechanical components? And is this worth getting replaced at dealer, its about 22 miles away, not even sure if the run-flats would make it that far.

If it was me, I would take to my local trusted indy shop to check the following:
-control arms
-bushings
-wheel bearing

Ask your indy to check it out, put it up on a hoist and take a look yourself. I need proof with my two eye balls.

Good luck with the repair and sorry to hear about that. MI roads are turrrible too.

I hit a massive one that was filled with rain water and looked just like a smooth surface. Scared the shit outta me when it happened. Strangely, my tire was fine but the rim was bent to hell. Also I think something happened to the suspension because it never felt right after that. I ended up trading it in a month later because it was getting high miles anyway but I would definitely get it checked out!

Get the replacement through TireRack.com, it will come with 2 years damage insurance included in the price. They'll have a place local to you they can ship it to for installation.

Since the impact was at a wheel spoke that might have prevented the wheel from being bent.

Look at this as a blessing in disguise, now you can get some non run flats and have a smooth ride and better handling!

The problem will be that the dealer *may* have your tire in stock, but it is unlikely anyone else will. So--can you wait for days while TireRack is shipping a replacement, or Just Tires gets your tire in stock??

If you are worried about the run flats making it to the dealer, you can get a tow from BWM Assist. You can call the dealer in advance and see if they have a loaner while they are getting the tire replaced.

Definitely not fun lol. The steering wheel vibrates and shakes while car is moving and the car steers to the left. And when I try to go over 40 MPH, car will automatically slow me down.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Will probably have a closeby shop take a look at it tomorrow morning but will also call up dealer to see what their prices are. If not too ridiculous (who am I kidding?) then maybe I'll take it to them.

Similar thing happened to me a month ago. I had to replace the tire and get an alignment afterwards.

That royally sucks man.

You'll likely need an alignment and quite possibly other suspension damage, but I doubt it unless you bottomed out. Have them check anyway.

Also, a bent rim can be fixed. Just ask your service guy who they'd use; much cheaper.

Paying for the RFT is what's going to hurt. Would also try to get the city to reimburse me, it's their pothole. You pay car registration taxes and fees for them to fix that sh...

OP, I had my tire damaged, my rim bent, my strut leaked, and I still have some suspension issues (going in tomorrow). Lucky me, somehow, I managed to get most of that covered under warranty (don't ask how). Just make sure if you feel any weird things after you get the tire fixed, bring it to BMW.

I checked Tirerack for the cost of my tire, and surprisingly, it's rather cheap (only $170 for the Pirelli Cinturato P7 all-season), now not sure how much dealer would charge...And about trying to get reimburse, I live in PA and their Dept. of Trans. website specifically states that by law, they are not responsible for paying damages from potholes lol.

Thanks, yeah that's what I'll be doing. Did you also hit a pothole? Was that what caused the damage to your tires, wheels, and suspension?

This is a job for the dealer. They can assess your wheel and if the balancing isnt rite you can take it back there. They can also assess the suspension condition. Saving $50 by using tire rack for this is a bad decision.

This is why I got the tire warranty from BMW. I've replaced 4 tires in just over a year of ownership. Three times I had to have the car towed. Only cost me $50 each time.

Yes, but how much did you pay for tire and wheel? Likely north of $1600, so basically you're about even.

Also note that the coverage can be haggled; hope you didn't pay full price.

I took off my RFTs also. Pilot Super Sports are on her now.

Sorry to hear that up in Pa. Certainly not the case here in Ga. I'd almost take them to court. Not for me, but to get things changed. Guess you have to really watch the road up there.

Once you figure in shipping, mounting, balancing, TPMS, and being without transportation, the dealer may not be much more than you are looking at.

I had a recent tire incident and was also pleasantly surprised by the Tire Rack pricing on the Cinturato P7. I got a call from one of their reps within a couple hours of placing the order to confirm something, and the tire arrived in the shop next day despite not specifically paying for overnight shipping.

The responsibility for personal property damage due to road hazard varies from state to state and even by municipality. You can submit a claim to the City of Boston for road hazard reimbursement for personal property damage, however if the stretch of road in question is a state road, Massachusetts will only cover BI claims due to road hazard. If in the case of collision or injury, there is a record of the incident, but in the case of vehicle damage, the burden of proof is more difficult to overcome if you just drove away.

My dealer quoted me $315 for the P7 Cinturato and I got it from Tire Rack next day for $170. I had it shipped directly to the dealer's shop.

Dealer just contacted me and yeah they're actually not charging me much for the tire and installation, will be bringing car there in the next hour.
