Tire width with stock wheels
Hey,
So winter is right around the corner, and of course, I need winter tires... My friend has a set of 245 45 18 he's willing to give me. Runfalts Dunlop M3 something... Will it fit my stock wheels? They came with 225 45 18... Just curious to know how much larger I can go on my wheels. Thanks in advance as always! |

Looks like they're listed to fit 7.5-9 inch rims.
Bigger diameter and wider will mean you're sacrificing some traction. But the price is right. |

But from what I understand, the 45-18 is what makes the diameter of the wheel. The 245 is just the width of the tire... I'm confused now... |

245 is the width in MM.... 45 is the ratio to the width that gives the tire wall height. 18 is size of wheel.
245mm X 0.45 = your sidewall height. Take this side wall height, multiply by 2 and add to your wheel size to give you the total diameter of your tire. don't forget to convert mm to inches or visa versa. |

245/45/18...The 245 is the width of the tire , but it may not be exactly 245MM every manufacturer is different.
The 45 is your tire side wall height in mm The 18 is obviously the measurement across the face of the rim You normally never go wider when using a snow tire . The narrower the tire the less "float" you'll get in snow, but if the price is right and it will fit..... Last edited by Reznick; 11-23-2012 at 08:52 AM.. Reason: added |

The OP is being offered a bigger tire, 5-series sizing to be specific. So a wider and taller tire. Not best for winter, I'm taking 245 sections off my car and fitting 225 section tires for winter use.
Going wider for winter is not the best idea, even if the taller tire has space. Also remember it will change the speedometer to 'real speed' accuracy, due to larger rolling circumference. BTW, the '45' is an "aspect ratio", just as mikew has highlighted. HighlandPete |

Okay,
So since the answers werent clear as to putting these tires on my stock wheels. I found another friend with these and I did the calculation for the tire etc and I'm only 1.xx % away from stock. So I could go with this I guess. Any idea what style# this wheel is? Any of you put these on the f30? Tire size is: 245/40r18 Tires: Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-03 Any feedback on these tires? Thanks again!!! |

The tires are slightly less diameter than your first ones, but still the same width, which is not the best for snow and ice.
A 225 would still be a better choice for winter conditions, but if you're looking for a free set, then I guess beggars can't be choosers! Note that they're not runflat, so if you get a flat, you're stuck. I have no idea what those wheels are. The issue would be to get wheels that have close to stock offset so there is no interference lock to lock. Poke around on the Google to see if you can identify which wheels they are, and see if the specifications are close to that of the stock wheels you have. |

I didnt get them for free, but the price I paid for brand new tires and 168 wheels, I couldnt pass it up. Went to my garage and we installed them and they worked just perfect. Yes they're a bit wider, which isnt the best of course, but with the limited mileage I do and all, it's gonna work just fine. And yes, of course they're runflats. So I wont get stuck! hehehe I'll post a pic later! |

Ya I did some quick research, they seem to be style 168 (m6?) from I found? They look great on the car too BTW! Fact that they're sticking out slightly scared me at first, but my Mechanic took it for a spin with stress tests and all, and he told me they're perfect! No rubbing whatsoever or anything to be concerned about. |
